The Margate Book Pot

Aim

The Margate Book Pot is a community fundraising project from The Margate Bookshop, providing free books for local primary schools.

Here in Thanet, we have the lowest children’s literacy rate and the highest child poverty rate in Kent. We believe every child should have the opportunity to experience the joy of owning and reading brilliant books, whatever their circumstances.

We aim to raise £5,000 to support reading for pleasure and give local children access to inspiring books — helping them discover more of the stories, authors and genres they love.

Every £10 donated provides £20 worth of new books, thanks to our trade discount and the generosity of the publishers and distributors we work with. That means our £5,000 target puts £10,000 worth of new books into local schools.

2026 is the National Year of Reading, making it the perfect time to relaunch a project we first introduced in 2022, when The Margate Bookshop delivered over 1000 books across ten local schools.

The Margate Book Pot will run from October to December, delivering books to participating schools in early 2027.
