The Little Box of Big Feelings brings together indie books, tools and small business made gifts to help you process big feelings like grief
Ninja Book Box is back, with our signature blend of brilliant independently published books, gifts that are both useful and beautiful and made by talented small businesses and additional resources put together by the ninjas themselves.
In 2016 I launched Ninja Book Box with a crowd funding project to fill a gap in the subscription boxes I saw and help get amazing independently published books of all genres into readers' hands! Since then I've been working to bring together fantastic books from independent publishers with beautiful small business made gifts to enhance and broaden your reading experience. Our mental health self care boxes have been the part of this that's closest to my heart, and I'm really happy to have the chance to bring this third installment of our bibliotherapy boxes to life, with your support!
The Little Box of Calm in 2018 centred around anxiety, The Little Box of Hope in 2021 helped us all to find moments of hope in our days after the pandemic lockdowns and huge shifts in our way of life, and now The Little Box of Big Feelings comes to help us process grief and trauma, with the inclusion of the first fiction book we've put in one of these boxes.
Our focus here, as always, is on independent publishers because they have smaller teams, smaller marketing budgets, and they take chances on less conventional voices. The book I've chosen for this box is The Grief Nurse by Angie Spotto, which comes out mid way through the crowdfunder for this project Sandstone Press, and is a beautiful reflection on grief and what it means to carry it with you.
If you've had our boxes in the past, this one will be a little different. During our hiatus from creating the box I've been thinking about the amount of stuff in the world and in my life, and looking for a way to make our boxes more streamlined, so instead of our previous book and 4-6 small gifts, this box will include the book (in hardback as it's a brand new release) and just one bigger, high quality small business made gift relating to grief and the processing of Big Feelings, as well as several tools from us and some extras from the publisher.
We didn't want to call the box 'the little box of grief' as it sounds heavy and sad, and although I understand how this book could sound like that, I promise it's full of joy and magic. More than anything, it's about the nature of grief and the different ways people carry it and process it, or try to cut themselves off from it. I read it during 2022, a year in which I lost my uncle and my grandma, and I found it incredibly soothing and thought provoking in the best possible way. My hope is that it will have the same effect for you!
Why Shouldn't I Just Order the Book?
You should! But if you get our box, you'll get some lovely extras including a letter from another Sandstone author, who is a retired psychiatrist, and some very carefully thought out additions to enhance your experience of reading the book, and provide you with a more immerse, healing reading experience. Essentially, ordering the book on its own (especially from the publisher) is brilliant, and our box is the next level of that, plus there are chances to get all sorts of other rewards here!
I loved your past boxes, why did you change them?
Thank you so much for loving what we've done in the past - I did too! I always want to be working towards providing the highest value in terms of useful things, sustainability, supporting other small businesses etc that I can for your money and I feel strongly that this slightly adjusted version of our box will do that.
Why are you crowdfunding? Why not just offer pre-orders?
Having taken time off from creating regular book boxes, we have some additional expenses we need to cover - things like buying the actual boxes, tissue paper, other stationery supplies, printing costs, website hosting fees and so on, as well as the costs of making the box itself and buying the contents in. We thought a crowdfunder would be the best way to get the word out that we're back to making boxes and inject a little new life into it all.
This project successfully funded on 27th April 2023
