The idea...
Sometimes we all need a little TLC...and we are a social enterprise that believes in exactly that!
So, from offering our customers some space to treat themselves and sourcing great produce through to working with ethical suppliers and supporting others in need, extending a little TLC is what The Larder Club is all about.
Part of the story...
A background in law, charity sector work and safeguarding has brought me into contact with some of the most vulnerable individuals within our society and hearing their stories underlines some of the issues prevalent in our world - faced by individuals - everyday - right on our doorsteps. Some of these stories belong to women offenders, among whom vulnerability is particularly stark for so many different reasons, including experiences of abuse, mental health issues and impact upon children and family.
I am passionate about empowering other women to change their lives for the better - I decided to do something about it...and so here is The Larder Club.
The deli...
I am York born and bred and I love what our county has to offer...but I am also in love with Italy where I've spent some brilliant times enjoying great coffee and fantastic food. It's something about the simplicity of both places, Yorkshire and Italy, that inspired the opening of an Italian deli with a Yorkshire twist to support the rehabilitation of women offenders.
The Larder Club deli will offer a sit down or take out experience of specialty coffee, charcuterie, cheese, gelato and wine. Italian, Yorkshire and ethically sourced retail products will also be available.
How will it make a difference...
This is a deli that is a little bit different...because not only does it exist to offer our customers a great service and experience, it also exists to reduce the risk of re-offending.
We are committed to using the majority of our profits for our cause. Therefore, working in conjunction with HMP Askham Grange we will enable women offenders to gain invaluable skills and experience not only through direct work placement and employment opportunities in the deli but through offering barista skills training - equipping women with the art of creating great specialty coffee.
How can you help?...
We have almost secured a great spot for the deli in the heart of York in an attractive area with high footfall. We are launching in early 2020 and are working full steam on making it come to life.
To make our mission a success, we need the deli to return a good profit and therefore we need a welcoming, comfortable and inviting space where our customers can have a quality and authentic experience. We are looking to raise a minimum of £8,000 to put towards the shop fit out and some initial barista skills training.
There's lots of things in our world…but there's always more room for some TLC. The Larder Club.
