The Joan Davis Scholarship Fund is fundraising for
The Paul Hodges Trust
Charity No. 1177636

£995
Joan cared passionately about education, and particularly the education of talented young people whose circumstances locked them out of the educational system. In her 90th year, she made the donation which allowed The Paul Hodges Trust, a registered charity run by her grandaughter and grandson-in-law, Jenny Carlen and Andrew Hodges, to set up this project. She was so proud when the Scholarship Fund was named in her honour.
The Paul Hodges Trust empowers women and girls in Sub-Saharan Africa, through a range of educational, employment and health related projects. This Scholarship Fund allows girls and young women from a destitute community in Sierra Leone, and an impoverished Masai community in Tanzania, to remain in secondary education, and to proceed to higher education and University.
Joan remained committed to the project through her remaining years. She followed the progress of "her girls" with huge enthusiasm, wrote to them, sent little personal gifts, and regularly both made donations and encouraged others to do so. She got huge satisfaction from seeing the project grow and thrive.
Joan was an inspiring woman, whose passion, dedication, energy and goodwill touched so many people. I can think of no more fitting cause for her friends to support in her honour, following her sad death on 15 September 2023.
Joan's funeral is at 2:45 on 3rd October 2023, at Breakspear Crematorium in Ruislip. It will be live streamed, and anyone who wilshes to participate remotely can do so via this link: Webcast of Joan's funeral.
