Who we are
I'm Amanda, the founder of The Highland Weigh. I have a nursing background, a passion for the environment and a love of the Highlands. The rest of our team have varied backgrounds but share common concerns for our planet and a desire to offer sustainable options for consumers in The Highlands.
The Highland Weigh is a social enterprise. Our profits will go towards our social and environmental objectives.
Our Mission
The Highland Weigh has a mission to reduce plastic and food-waste.
There are better ways to shop and cook that don't involve single use plastic and food waste. And actually, it's fun and engaging.
The store will dispense dry goods through gravity dispensers. Household cleaning products and toiletries can be dispensed into the customers' containers. 30 core products will be sold at a reduced price to eliminate the need to choose between affordability and plastic free.
We are working with local producers to sell their incredible Highlands and Islands products with as little packaging and waste as possible. Local Rapeseed oil, milk, ice-cream, Kombucha, soaps, jams and sauces to name just a few.
More than a store ...
The Highland Weigh wants to be more than a zero-waste store, we aim to create a community hub in our cafe, where the local community can hold and attend events, workshops and talks.
- Mending and Repairing
- Wildlife friendly gardening
- Mini-quilt workshop
- Gut health
- Christmas crafts
Cooking skills and recipes can be exchanged, children can 'swap shop' toys and books.
Why are we crowdfunding?
We have secured a rather cool space, to make a home for The Highland Weigh. Refurbishment is currently under-way.
It's not the easiest time to start a new business ... we could have waited. But the environmental and social aims of the business are required now. We can't really wait for lower fuel bills, an end to wars, no pandemics. So we decided to go for it!
In the Highlands there's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! So we are putting on our wellies and wading it!
We thought long and hard about crowdfunding at this difficult time. How could we ask for support when so many people are struggling?
The Highland Weigh store in Nairn required updating and adapting. It's a great space and in an ideal location on the High Street. We are problem solving, in order to create a warm, inviting shop space and put in place the equipment to make the shopping experience as enjoyable as possible
We hope you will see our various rewards offer you the opportunity to support our endeavors whilst also benefiting from some great discount and vouchers.
Thank you
Amanda and The Highland Weigh team x
