Heart n Soul need your help to raise £6,200 for a community choir in Deptford for people with learning disabilities. #OurVoice
Why a choir? Why now?
Heart n Soul have been working with people with learning disabilities for 30 years. This year, as part of our 30th birthday celebrations we are creating the Heart n Soul choir, giving a voice to people with learning disabilities.
Around 1.5 million people in the UK have a learning disability and they are one of the most excluded groups in our society. In 2016, people with learning disabilities have an extremely difficult and uncertain future ahead.
Our participants at Heart n Soul asked us to create a choir to give them a safe space where they can feel at home and be part of something. We need your help to make this happen! Choir participant Peter said:
“Singing in the choir is another new thing I’ve been doing. I used to sing indoors, but never thought about it further until I came to Heart n Soul. I love everyone working and harmonising together.”
The choir will give them space and support to creatively express themselves and a platform to be heard. Singing in a choir offers real health benefits too! Regular choir sessions help to build and strengthen a sense of community and reduce isolation and depression.
Local choir concerts will help to build links with the local community, creating a happier, more musical Deptford for everyone!
How we’ll get it done
We will be working with experienced choir leader Penny Manser to bring our project to life. Over the year we will run 24 choir sessions, giving participants a chance to develop their singing skills and build friendships.
We’ll be offering volunteer opportunities for local people to get involved, learn a new skill and be part of something amazing! We’ll also be sharing the love by giving choir concerts for our funders, local businesses and community centres.
The choir will be open to anyone with a learning disability from Deptford and beyond. Your funding will help us to provide FREE choir sessions making the choir open and accessible to the people who need it most.
Who We Are
Heart n Soul is an award-winning creative arts company. We believe in the talents and power of people with learning disabilities. We provide creative spaces for disabled and non-disabled artists and participants to come together and develop and share their ideas. We are based at The Albany Theatre in Deptford where we have been working with local people for nearly 30 years.
How you can help
We need to raise £6,200 to make our choir happen. This will cover the choir leader fee, room hire, volunteer expenses and any extra support that we need for our participants.
Everyone who donates to the project will be invited to an exclusive party, featuring performances by the choir and a chance to join in! We’ve got lots of other great rewards for people who donate, just check out the information on the right.
