Aim

Help us build a Zero Waste Lab to research, sort & process materials collected by The Green Centre for better reuse, recycling and upcycling

The Green Centre is 15 years old on 25th March 2021. Hippy Bathday to us!

Since March 25th 2006 when the Green Centre was founded, the centre has been run entirely by volunteers, 75% of whom have disabilities or special circumstances. Primarily we are an environmental education project and have been educating Brighton & Hove residents in One Planet Living alongside our ZERO WASTE PROGRAM.

Every year TEAM GC donate £150,000 worth of time, welcome 15,000 visitors, facilitate online engagement with 40,000 customers and divert 20 tonnes of resources from incineration. In addition to our ONE PLANET LIVING PROGRAMME and ZERO WASTE programme The Green Centre supports 10 charities including communities is Gambia, Ghana, Kenya and Uganda and been actively involved in a successful campaign against mining in Colombia.

To help us celebrate our 15th birthday we hope you can support our ambitions to build a ZERO WASTE LAB.

If you’re an existing Green Centre user then you’ll know the benefits and scope of our free recycling / reuse services and we’d like more people in the city to get involved – to waste less and live more sustainable lives.

We have recently partnered with Freegle Brighton (run by Cat Fletcher) to launch an Environmental Hub called PLANET BRIGHTON. This first hub will be our HQ - a place in the city centre to learn about and action sustainability for everyone in Brighton and Hove.

The hub will also provide a space for other environmental organisations to cohabit creating an environmental family under one roof. We have leased and are currently preparing Unit 1 at The Open Market and will open the hub in the near future - thanks to Brighton & Hove City Council Community fund for their support in making this happen.

We are crowdfunding specifically to build an extension at the rear of Unit 1 to create an enclosed weather-proof space for materials collected by The Green Centre, Freegle and friends - to be sorted, processed and organised to maximise waste prevention and improve our capacity and efficiency!

The ZERO WASTE LAB will provide opportunities for other groups to support these principles. THINK repair, upcycling, creative reuse!

Building this special space to carry out our work at Planet Brighton will reduce our carbon-footprint (less transporting of stuff) and provide more opportunities to handle more materials and to do creative research and development....and all a whole lot more efficiently as our activities will be centralised at one easy to access site!

We will pay a local builder to build the structure, supporting the local economy, and where possible procure recycled or reused materials. New materials will be procured from local suppliers.

To give you an idea of how the money will be spent

£ 5 buys a box of nails or screws

£ 10 buys a piece of timber or a litre of recycled paint

£ 20 buys an hour of professional labour

£ 30 pays for an man and van for an hour

If the Green Centre is new to you, please check out our website https://www.thegreencentre.co.uk to fully understand the variety and scope of what we have been doing this past 15 years!
