The Great Gatsby is a brand-new, original play by Mina Moniri and Peter Todd, adapted from the F. Scott Fitzgerald 1925 classic. With a successful and very-well received original run at the Oxford Playhouse in 2023, we are excited to be bringing a developed and refined version of the production to the Cockpit Theatre in Marylebone, London, between 28th November and the 14th December. This comes at a huge financial cost for the company and we are hoping to raise £3000 to help to cover the financial needs for a show on this scale.
Who are we?
Scar Theatre is an emerging theatre company based in London and Oxford dedicated to sharing the humanity in ugly stories, warts and all. We aim to create honest, hard-hitting theatre, and are keen to push the technical boundaries of onstage lighting, sound and movement and prioritise the accessibility of theatre for all.
Founded in 2022, Scar have produced a wide range of theatre across London and Oxford, with a focus on new writing and powerful character-driven narratives. Highlights include Scar Theatre's debut production Skin, written and directed by Peter Todd, with an original run in 2022 at the O'Reilly Theatre in Oxford before transferring to Jack Studio in London last summer. Our most recent production Bury Me, written and directed by Mina Moniri, had a highly successful original run at Riverside Studios during their 2024 season, described as a "tender and emotionally hard-hitting" piece (Wild Roses and Pearls).
Here is just some of the praise our incredible cast received from critics:
Why are we fundraising?
We are a company comprised entirely of students and recent graduates, making theatre in an increasingly difficult time for the arts. This money will be used to cover travel, production costs (such as our purpose-built set for an in-the-round theatre), and allow us to provide BSL interpretation for at least one of our shows. We are hoping to establish ourselves within the London theatre scene as innovative creators, putting our cast and crew on the map to launch careers in the arts - you can help us make that mission possible!
About the play
Our version of The Great Gatsby is a “powerful, thrilling, and moving” adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's beloved original novel retelling the Jazz-Age classic from a queer, feminist perspective (Peter Kessler, The President’s Husband Reviews).
Nick, a young and ambitious stockbroker, is befriended by the illusive millionaire, Jay Gatsby. At first enamoured with the lavish lifestyle of the nouveau-riche, Nick soon begins to see through the cracks in Gatsby's façade, where deception and tragedy lie in wait.
Set against the glamorous backdrop of New York in the roaring twenties, The Great Gatsby tells a heart-breaking tale of social stratification, excess and unfulfilled love that treads the line of dark obsession, immensely extended with a “sapphic twist on the show” that “rings true” (Sophia Holme, Daily Info).
