THE FACE OF HOMELESS BRITAIN - THE BROCK ELBANK FOUNDATION

British photographer Brock Elbank is transforming personal hardship into a bold,
humanising national photography series after finding himself homeless in November 2024.
On the evening of Monday, 18 November 2024, the acclaimed portraitphotographer, celebrated for his striking, deeply human work, unexpectedly lost his home. What followed was a period of profound upheaval, as Elbank navigated the emotional and physical challenges of life without a fixed address - an experience shared by hundreds of thousands across the UK each year.
Rather than retreat, Elbank chose to respond with purpose.
Now 53, he has spent the past year and a half largely living out of his car in and around London and the UK, documenting the lives of those experiencing homelessness. Through his lens, he is capturing raw, authentic stories - each shaped by unique circumstances ranging from addiction and family breakdown to unemployment and unforeseen life events.
“Those first few weeks I felt like everyone knew I was in my car day and night - it was strange,” Elbank reflects. “But then you become almost invisible, like everyone else is living one life and you’re in this bubble, struggling day to day.” This sense of invisibility has become the driving force behind his latest body of work.
A National Mission to Tell Untold Stories
Through lived-experience, Elbank is now embarking on an ambitious new photography series: travelling the length and breadth of Britain to document homelessness. Living and working from his car, he will continue creating intimate portraiture that amplifies unheard voices across 18 major UK cities.
“Their experiences and journeys need to be read, heard and understood,” he says. “This is about educating both the public and those in positions of power.”
The project aims to confront a pressing national question: how does one of the world’s wealthiest countries have nearly 400,000 people without stable housing?
This project builds on Elbank’s long-standing commitment to documenting those often marginalised by society. His work has spanned celebrated series including Freckles, Vitiligo, Scars, CMN, and most recently, his Superhumans Center series photographing those affected by war in Ukraine.
Elbank appeared on BBC One’s Extraordinary Portraits with Bill Bailey in 2023.
At the heart of his work is The Brock Elbank Foundation, dedicated to educating,
challenging stigma, and humanising lived experiences—principles that underpin this new homelessness project.
“The Face of Homelessness”The project will culminate in a major London exhibition titled “The Face of Homelessness”, with the aim for a national tour to follow. Through powerful imagery and personal testimony, it aims to spark dialogue, deepen understanding, and inspire action. Living the reality himself while documenting it, Elbank’s work offers a rare and deeply authentic perspective—one that bridges art, advocacy, and lived experience.
