Aim
The intention of the project is to prevent people already facing financial problems being pushed into more severe financial difficulty.
Hi, I'm Val Huxley co-founder of People against Poverty, a small charity based in the Devizes area of Wiltshire.
The Dignity Project was set up in 2020 during Covid when working with our local church foodbank. We found that families here in the UK who were already facing financial difficulties were being pushed further into poverty when their white goods broke down and they could ill afford to replace them - taking out expensive loans or worst still, hire purchase. The project helps families by:
- helping improve nutrition by supplying a cooker so that homemade meals can be made at the same time lowering food costs.
- Providing a washing machine will give better hygiene and avoid further expense by attending costly launderettes.
- Supply fridge/freezers that will allow for better budgeting and bulk buying.
A woman or man who may be escaping an abusive relationship is often placed in a safe house. Once they leave the safe house, it is then left for them to buy their own contents of the home. Often this is when the loans or hire purchase is taken out to purchase essential items like a cooker and fridge/freezer or washing machine.
Another of our clients have been referrals from social services who have worked with young children in safeguarding and who have now reached 18 ready to leave the care system. Given a place to live, but they need to find their own contents for the home, often just out of the system with no job.
The Dignity Project is what it says on the can, giving back dignity to those who feel they have nothing left in life.
We have partnered with a local small business to provide the white goods who delivers them for free and gives a one year warranty on all new products.
We began with the local foodbank and now want to increase this to other foodbanks and social services within the Wiltshire community.
This project successfully funded on 7th December 2021
