Aim

Pledge your support for a Board game café in the heart of Nottingham, A friendly place to relax and play games with friend old and new!

We'd like to welcome you to Nottingham's Board Game Cafe - The Dice Cup.

We need to build it first though, and that's where this Crowdfunder.co.uk campaign comes in.

What we have planned is the culmination of years of dreaming about a place designed with board gaming in mind.

  •  You can play any of our vast array of board games and if you find one you really like, there will be plenty available to buy and take home too.
  •  We will have tables suitable for gaming at (more details of those later) and comfortable chairs.
  •  While you play, you can enjoy great coffee, a pot of tea, hot chocolate, a smoothie, or one of a range of soft drinks along with sweet or savoury snack options.
  •  Our staff can teach you how to play and help you choose a suitable game for whatever group you're with. There are games for all tastes and age ranges.
  •  We will host a variety of board game tournaments, themed nights, big social games, and community groups.

What is a board game cafe?

As the name suggests, a board game cafe is a place where anyone can come in to play board games and have some refreshments.

What makes a board game cafe like ours special is more than just the fact that there are over 500 games available to play, with new games arriving each week. Our staff will be able to match you with a game if you don't know what you want to play, match you with other players if you're looking for people to play with, and show you how to play the game you end up choosing.

We have games from a wide range of genres. You can play classics like chess, draughts, and backgammon, well known family favourites like Game of Life, Scrabble, and Cluedo, Euro classics like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne and Alhambra, American style games, Co-operative games like Shadows over Camelot, Battlestar Galactica, and Dead of Winter,  Party games, Social games, Games for kids, and many, many more. If it can conceivably be classed as a board game, then we will try to have it.

We will have a different theme each week and will be promoting games that fit that theme with related special offers.

What are your opening times?

We will be open 7 days a week at 10am and stay open until late. How late will depend on you. Come and keep us busy and we'll stay open :)

What does it cost to play?

To play the games from our collection there is a cover fee of £5 per person, which will cover you for a session up to 3-4 hours. If you have one of our membership cards that fee will be reduced to £3, £1, or nothing accordingly.

There is no limit to how long you can stay, If you want to stay and play all day, we will have extended session deals.

There will be a number of social group nights, the cover fee on those nights will be £2 for non-members or free to members.

What else do you have planned?

We will have a youtube channel with video reviews for newly released games as well as videos showing how to play the games in our collection so you can come prepared.

We are also planning to record a weekly podcast where we will discuss games in a fun, laid back, and hopefully entertaining way.

We want The Dice Cup to have a positive effect on society and will be running special workshops for Children with special educational needs, Fundraising events for Charity etc.

Stretch Goals

Liquor licence

We will definitely have a large selection of hot drinks and soft drinks, but we know some of you like to enjoy a craft beer or glass of wine with your games, so if we reach £13,000 we will be applying for a liquor licence and stocking a range of high quality ales and wines. We'll also accompany this with the addition of a few extra wine and beer related board games to the shelves :)

Amazing tables

See Update #4 "Change of Plans" for news on how we will have the best tables possible!

Super Charged Game collection

It's all about the games, If we reach £18,000 we will increase our games stock to over a thousand games!

Bigger location

If we reach £17,000 we will take both sides of the unit shown in update #6 allowing us to do more things such as having a seperate area for rpg games or quiet sessions, having a comfy sofa area to chill out while playing light games or reading comics or game rules, and even having a full kitchen.

If we reach £15,000 we will open in the larger of the 2 sections shown in our update video #6.

Risks and challenges

The Dice Cup has been long in the planning. Due diligence and market research has been made, and having set up as a Limited Company we just need the capital to get up and running as soon as we can.
Coming on board the team is someone who has run a gaming and comic retail business for over five years already, so much of the infrastructure is already in place.
With the groundwork laid the next step will be to secure a good location, we have begun work to that end but can't continue until we have financial support. This step has the potential to cause most delays after the end of the campaign but we aim to be selling you games and drinks within the shortest time possible.
We need your help to make The Dice Cup the gaming centre it has the potential to be, so please help spread the word and get pledging.
