1518AD - when a pregnant woman murders her husband, she is forced to flee to the woods, where she forms an unlikely connection with a band of outcasts who draw her into a frenzied forest dance ritual.
The Dancing Plague is a film about feminine rage and rebellion, following the story of a medieval woman breaking the shackles of societal expectation to live on her own terms. The piece confronts ever-topical themes of female bodily autonomy, cultural subjugation of women and girls, and the consequences they face when they refuse to submit.
In Medieval England, women who fell outside of accepted societal norms were conveniently removed from society under the guise of being “witches". In retrospect, we can see how these very women were victims of mental illness and deprivation. This film will challenge deep-rooted beliefs about “witches”, and suggest that this community of outcasts are the only ones who can truly save our protagonist.
Shooting to take place over 3 days the week of the 14th of April, across locations in Surrey and Hampshire. Progress on this project can be tracked on the 'Updates' section on this page.
