To provide a basic food package for a family in Bali with no income, no Gov benefits and no other way of feeding themselves due to Covid-19.
Background
Covid-19 is hitting us hard in the UK, though thankfully we live in a country with a support network of government benefits, the NHS, Food Banks, incredible Charities etc.
Imagine living where benefits and healthcare are not provided by the government and where over 85% of the economy relied on international tourism and this just stopped. No jobs, no income and no work available to earn money, no support network and no way to feed yourself and your family, this is Bali right now.
Bali is one of the Indonesian islands that was made us welcome for years to their shores for our holidays. They are a humble, welcoming and proud people, who usually when problems happen, they pull together and support each other, however they can. Though with the majority of Bali families now not having a single family member able to earn money, this time they can't support each other and they have no where to turn for help.
Whilst the vast majority of Indonesia is Muslim, Bali is not, and this distances Bali politically and religiously from the government in Jakarta and any Covid-19 assistance that is coming from the government, is yet to reach the people of Bali.
What is Crisis Kitchen Bali?
Crisis Kitchen Bali is part of the Tropicana Churros Cafe, and is ran by volunteers. We started only days ago, we came out of isolation to ask people to donate food for and cook with the aim to provide 100 cooked meals a day, free to anyone who did not have food. We knew this would not solve Bali's Covid-19 problems, though we could not stand by and do nothing, and when our time is free and £10 of food feeds 2 families for a whole week, we had to do what we thought was achievable.
Only days later we are cooking several hundred meals a-day and we have also started creating and handing out hundreds per day of the most basic food packages to allow a family to cook meals themselves. It is the most humbling experience to hand out a small package of simply rice, noodles, eggs and a few vegetables and a mother thanking you again and again, hands together in prayer, as though you had given her the world, as today she can feed her family, as yesterday she, her husband, her children and their grandparents did not.
Every single day we are receiving more and more messages, every message starts with an apology, for they are so sorry to bother us, but could we possibly help. They have no food for their family or even milk for their new born babies and no money to buy any. We are helping everyone we can, though our resources are limited and the number of people asking us for help is growing, but how can we choose which families to help?
Please check out our YouTube videos and Facebook links and below are a few pictures of the volunteers, the grateful Balinese people and example messages we receive (you may need to translate the incredibly humbling messages).
Should I make a donation?
We know times are hard for you too, though please any amount, small or more would not just be appreciated, it will allow us to feed families that would otherwise go hungry, and if we dare to have hope, even increase the number of families we are able to help with a cooked meal or a food package as have no where else to turn.
Until the Indonesian government steps in and ensures its people have food to eat, then we hope, with your help, to provide this service until recovery happens in Bali.
Once 'lockdown' finishes for the UK, we will be back to work, for the people of Bali, until we start going back there on holiday, as we did before Covid-19, then they have no work to go back to, no way to earn an income and therefore they will not be able to buy food and feed their families and until then we will do what we can, please join us by donating and if you have donated already please see the difference you have made.
I've chosen not to mention the Covid-19 health risks, the fact that h ere there are no hospital beds for Balinese people to be admitted to, no space for families in their homes to self isolate a family member who is sick, no respirators and no hopes of a vaccine, as even when was is available, they can't afford it. We cannot solve these problems, what we can provide with your help is hope for tomorrow by having food for today and give a mother or father back their pride by being able again to feed their family.
Thank you for reading, donating if you can, though may we please ask everyone (whether you've been able to donate or not) you to share this link with your friends, family and colleagues, so that they may consider helping too.
We and the humble people of Bali thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Please everyone stay safe and be there for each other through these hard times
