I think this is slightly bonkers... but lots of you asked if you could sponsor a cow, so we have decided to make it possible.
NB: Please stop donating as we have been to the sales and with this money bought three cows. We haven’t done the final maths but the small surplus we will spend on trees for our woodland. See Twitter for updates and pics of the cows and news. Thank you from bottom of our hearts - it is a bit bonkers but makes a huge difference to us.
We are working across the farm to make it super nature friendly.
People seem to like that when we share it on Twitter - @herdyshepherd1
The cows we plan to buy this autumn will be used to graze our extensive species-rich pastures for years to come.
They will be the foundation females for our new herd of pedigree Belted Galloways.
So it is a way of supporting and being involved in our farm and it’s wider conservation efforts. You won’t own a cow legally, but you will in spirit and we will be able to share their lives on social media.
Once a year in summer we will invite all donors to come to an open day at which we will do a farm walk and share our projects.
A good pedigree Belted Galloway cow costs about £1500-£3000
They can live for many years - c. 15
Their daughters will become part of the herd if they are high quality, or sold if surplus to requirements for breeding. Their sons will either become breeding bulls or be fattened for meat on our pastures (if you don’t like that please don’t donate).
Sponsors receive no financial return on their donations.
We will be using the cows to graze our woodland pasture that we are planting and our species rich pastures - some of which have ninety plus species in them.
