Aim

Set up in 2016 to cater for the ever increasing ranks of people seeking to celebrate the virtues of Byzantine civilisation around the globe.

The story of the Byzantine Empire is a mystery to many who are otherwise knowledgeable about western civilisation or others. And, sadly, when its history is known, it often still lies buried under layers of Orientalist tropes.

Today, whether Popes such as Benedict XVI are referencing it, Dolce & Gabbana is copying its styles or Simon Sebag Montefiore is celebrating it in BBC documentaries, the Empire is making a comeback.

The Byzantine Society (www.byzantinesociety.com) seeks to boost the civilisation's profile further by taking a huge online community that's fanatical about Byzantium offline and into the real world.

To do this funds are needed to pay for lecture hall facilities, speakers, events organisation and administration on a global scale.
