Aim

To realise the transformation of our community centre and dis-used spaces, as co-designed with our community, and address local challenges

The Boiler House Community Space (BHCS) is redefining what local community centres can offer through a programme of building, growing and greening the surrounding space. We have worked with the local community to understand their priorities and how they would like to see the space used.

In partnership with Sanchez Benton Architects, we co-designed a concept, reaching deep into the community to address the issues highlighted by our research.  This project will include adaptable, multifunctional community spaces, which will increase the range and accessibility of activities and services available to members of the community right on their doorsteps, including:-

  • Community Garden (incl workshops and a space to relax)
  • Facilities to support urban agriculture
  • Kitchen and café kiosk
  • Sports and Fitness centre
  • Creative spaces
  • Meeting/ therapy room

Our capital build project will use environmentally sensitive approaches and engage the community in this by showcasing sustainable solutions such as:

  • Vertical/hydroponic growing, as well as reducing food miles by demonstrating urban agriculture
  • Encouraging ‘grow your own’ and locally grown produce through development of green social enterprises.
  • By greening under-used and dis-used spaces including the building roofs, living walls and community gardens, we aim to increase access to green space,
  • Improve biodiversity
  • Reduce CO2 through the absorption of pollution.
  • Increase our bee hives and honey social enterprise

Where we're at...

A significant amount of capital funding is in place along with planning permission and we have appointed Sanchez Benton Architects who have drawn up plans and will manage the build, and a contractor has been selected.  We are fundraising for additional works, including for instance adding green/living roofs and increasing functionality of the new building and creating a community garden as well as the refurbishment of the existing building which will work together to realise our vision.
