THE BACKDATER FILM

'The Backdater' is a gritty social drama set in Saltcoats, a working-class town in the west coast of Scotland, where writer  Eddie Clarke grew up. The film follows Gydo and Spammy, two traumatised young men who have been ravished by addiction, with Gydo, who dreams of creating a better life but can't seem to find his way out. On the day of his 27th birthday, Gydo is driven by the hope of finding the answers for both him and Spammy, free from the cycle of addiction, poverty and criminality that surrounds them. The film portrays Gydos journey with raw realism, highlighting the harsh socio-economic realities faced by many working class young men. Eddie Clarke's script provides an unflinching look at the impact of poverty, broken homes, trauma, and limited opportunities. The dialogue is delivered in authentic Scottish dialect, adding to the films gritty authenticity.

OUR VISION

The writing, filming and acting will all be delivered by people with lived experience of addiction and mental health. This project is created to develop and showcase people who have managed to address their own personal issues and go on to achieve goals which seemed out of their remit.

By donating to our exciting project, you will help cover the costs of developing, performing and showcasing a feature film that educates others in the many reasons people find themselves addicted to substances and the underlying issues that have a major factor in this.

This is a project for the community to be involved in, and there are opportunities for those who donate to play a role within the project, whether that is being part of the crew, or having the experience of being in the film itself.

We aim to raise £15,000 to cover the many financial overheads. These include, equipment hire, cinematographer, sound recordist, actors, editing, set hire, expenses and showcasing of the film.
