A few words from Rosemary Breen, née Barrett
"As Syd Barrett’s sister, I am incredibly moved by the creation of The Artyst: The Cambridge Centre for Arts & Wellbeing. This project is a heartfelt tribute to Syd, capturing the essence of his creativity, his deeply curious and playful nature, and the impact he had on so many lives. It’s wonderful to see a space dedicated not only to celebrating his artistic contributions but also to fostering a sense of connection and wellbeing.
I believe this venue will be a place where his spirit lives on, inspiring new generations to nurture their own creative lives and forge vibrant new projects and supportive communities together. It’s a beautiful way to honour Syd, and I am grateful to everyone involved in bringing this vision to life."

The Cultural Landscape
There is widespread recognition that poor mental health and wellbeing, as well as inequitable access to the arts, are pressing challenges in society.
We are aware of a major cultural shift in attitudes towards wellbeing and sobriety among young people — with a quarter of under 25s now teetotal, wanting something different from their cultural and social experiences, including mental health awareness.
And we know, from experience, the intrinsic link between creativity and wellbeing, and the transformative power of the arts.
The city of Cambridge is a world-famous destination. The University and its rich heritage, the punts, the museums and gardens... the well-told Cambridge stories, the well-worn grooves. We embrace the special identity of our city and... we feel it’s time for a new groove!
The cultural life of Cambridge offers music and concert venues, theatres, galleries and many, many pubs and bars, but there is nothing quite like this.

About Our Project:
Celebrating Syd Barrett
Our new arts initiative is inspired by Syd Barrett, born in Cambridge, a founding member of Pink Floyd and a driving force behind the band’s early success. Syd Barrett’s innovative approach to music and art laid the groundwork for Pink Floyd’s distinctive sound and helped propel the band to international acclaim.
Our project aims to honour his legacy while promoting arts and wellbeing with distinctive and inspired experiences. Here, Syd will SHINE ON!
We’ll tell Syd’s story through a collection of original photographs, art and memorabilia, and on a unique walking tour of Syd’s Cambridge, developed with Rosemary, Syd’s sister. The Artyst will feature exhibitions and educational programmes that explore his impact on contemporary culture, deepening understanding and appreciation of Barrett’s art and music. We’ll celebrate Cambridge’s wider alternative artistic legacy and communities, continuing this story as the city evolves into the future.
Our Story:
Arts & Social Inclusion
The Artyst brings together unrivaled skills and experience in delivering successful projects like this in Cambridge, for Cambridge, that have changed the social arts landscape and captured global attention.
This story began 20 years ago with Escape Artists, a Cambridge-based theatre company. Under the direction of Matthew Taylor, Escape Artists staged two highly acclaimed music and mental health projects inspired by the music of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd — the groundbreaking Cambridge Cantata at Kings College Chapel in 2005 and The City Wakes in 2008.
For over a decade, as a sector leader, Escape Artists delivered a programme of hugely successful, specially commissioned arts and education projects in prisons, mental health services, and local communities. It then became an accredited learning provider and produced and hosted Europe’s groundbreaking arts and mental health conference, The Edge.
The Artyst marks the next chapter in this ongoing journey.
Our Mission:
Creativity & Innovation
Creativity and innovation are the beating heart of The Artyst. In the spirit of Syd Barrett’s eclectic and boundary-pushing work, we aim to create an environment that encourages artistic exploration and freedom. Our venue will facilitate collaborations between artists and musicians, inspired by Barrett’s interdisciplinary approach. By providing a space for creative exploration, we hope to inspire new artistic expressions and innovations.

Supporting Mental Health & Wellbeing
Our events programme will explore the natural unity of arts and wellbeing. Recognising the importance of mental health, we will promote good mental wellbeing practices for artists and the broader community, that can help improve confidence and emotional and mental resilience. Inspired by Syd Barrett’s personal journey, we aim to raise awareness and provide resources for mental health support. As well as classes such as drawing, DJing, creative writing, and self-expression, we’ll offer sessions on mindfulness, yoga, and other embodied movement—evolving our programme and responding to the needs and interests of our community.

Nourishing Body, Mind & Spirit
Our wholehearted commitment to wellbeing will be expressed by the wholesome goodness of the food served in the Café. A carefully curated menu will feature health-conscious, vegetarian and vegan meals and snacks, emphasising the natural mood-boosting effects of delicious and nourishing food. Specialty drinks such as kombucha, pressed juices, and botanically based mocktails will provide uplifting and tasty alternatives to alcoholic drinks. Ensuring the highest ethical and quality standards, we will lean toward whole foods and ingredients from local suppliers and sources wherever possible.
Curiosity & Imagination: Records, Games, Puzzles & More
Community engagement is at the core of our project. Our goal is to bring people together, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment founded on diversity and creativity. One of the ways we’ll draw people in and encourage connection and dialogue is through games and puzzles, the sharing and playing of vintage vinyl and memorabilia, as well as the sale of exclusively designed Syd and Pink Floyd inspired merchandise.
Syd Barrett's Contribution to Pink Floyd
"Syd was a unique talent, one of the most extraordinary people I’ve ever known. He created a whole genre of music. He was the heart and soul of the band."

Syd was more than just a founding member of Pink Floyd; he was the band’s original creative visionary. His influence in the early years was profound, shaping the unique sound and identity that would come to define Pink Floyd. As the lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter, Barrett’s contributions were pivotal to the creation of their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), which stands as a cornerstone of British psychedelia. His innovative approach to music, marked by surreal lyrics, experimental soundscapes, and unconventional structures, laid the groundwork for the band’s future direction. These early contributions set the stage for Pink Floyd to evolve into one of the most successful and influential bands in music history, selling over 250 million records worldwide and achieving global acclaim with albums like The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.
Even after Barrett’s departure, his presence loomed large in the band’s later work. Pink Floyd frequently reflected on Barrett’s influence in their music, particularly in albums like Wish You Were Here (1975), which includes the iconic tribute Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a poignant acknowledgment of Barrett’s genius and struggles. Additionally, songs like Brain Damage from The Dark Side of the Moon and High Hopes from The Division Bell subtly nod to Barrett’s lasting impact on the band, illustrating how his early contributions continued to shape the band’s music and themes long after he was an active member.
"He was a wonderful, original mind, and he was an integral part of the band in those early days. His influence was felt long after he left."
Nick Mason

Syd Barrett's Contribution to the World Beyond
"Syd was the guiding light of the early band, and it was his absence, which caused us to pull together and become Pink Floyd as people now know us."

"In today’s increasingly fragmented world, where digital interactions often replace face-to-face connections, spaces like The Artyst are more crucial than ever. We are witnessing a growing epidemic of isolation and loneliness, particularly among young people who find it harder to form meaningful, real-world connections.
By creating an inclusive, welcoming environment dedicated to arts, music, and wellbeing, we aim to foster genuine human connectivity. Our space is designed to bring people together, encouraging interaction, creativity, and a sense of community that is vital for emotional and mental health.
In a time when many feel disconnected, The Artyst
offers a sanctuary for people to share experiences, find common ground, and build lasting relationships."
