Mama to Mama: A Lifeline for Families in Thanet

Mama to Mama is not just Thanet’s only baby bank — we’re a lifeline for vulnerable pregnant women and families struggling to raise babies and young children with limited resources. This year alone, over 240 families in Thanet would have gone without essential clothing, equipment, and support if it weren’t for our service.

Thanet is one of the most deprived areas in England. Some families here are under constant financial strain, often unable to afford basic necessities like food, hygiene products, and heating. The toll of poverty isn’t just financial: it leads to isolation, stress, and poor mental and physical health, creating a cycle of disadvantage.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Strengthening Financial Wellbeing 

Mama to Mama aims to disrupt this cycle of poverty, ensuring that every family, no matter their background, has the chance to thrive. We do this through both practical support — from baby clothes and equipment to grants and resources — and emotional care. Through inclusive wellbeing workshops and 1:1 support, we help parents build confidence, reduce isolation, and create a strong sense of community in the early, crucial years of their children’s lives.

We strengthen financial wellbeing by reducing immediate hardship and helping families build lasting stability. By providing free baby clothing, equipment, and essentials parents can redirect limited income toward food, rent, and utilities. Through one-to-one guidance, we connect families with budgeting, benefits, and debt support, empowering them to manage money more effectively. Our workshops build confidence, reduce isolation, and share practical skills for making resources go further. This combination of direct support and empowerment helps families become more financially resilient, independent, and better equipped to give their children a secure start.

Last year alone we distributed £125K worth of preloved baby clothing and equipment and launched our 3 workshops which included Create & Chat, Empower Your Motherhood and Natures Playgroup. We also started our volunteer-led buddy walking service to help families feel supported when attending new settings.

We need your help

Since April, our referrals have increased by 20%, clearly demonstrating the growing demand for our support. We are more than just a baby bank; we are a charity dedicated to improving financial and mental wellbeing of parents and families, helping them break free from the cycle of poverty.

With more and more charities applying for limited grant funding, the need for us to diversify how we raise money and support local families has never been greater. That’s why we’re aiming to raise £20,000 through our annual Crowdfunder — and we need your help to get there!
