To print a translation of Ted Rules the World by Frank Cottrell-Boyce to be launched on the International Day for Protection of Children
The Cornish language is part of the Celtic family of languages with close links to Welsh and Breton and more distant links with Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Manx. Cornish is a revived language that almost disappeared in the 1800’s, but through the efforts of Cornish language revivalists the language has grown in popularity ever since. Even though the numbers of speakers are small, over the last decade interest in Cornish has rapidly expanded and it’s estimated that there are now thousands of people who have some knowledge of the language.
Research shows that if a language is to be successfully revived that it is the very youngest in society that need to learn it. Children absorb and learn languages at an astonishing rate, but learning needs to be systematic and part of their everyday experience and this has been one of the driving forces behind promoting the Cornish language further.
Language is a huge part of Cornish heritage and we feel this is an important concept to promote. Cornwall has produced so many amazing people, some you may be aware of, others maybe not so much. As an example how many are aware that John Adams who co-discovered the planet Neptune was Cornish, or perhaps Richard Lower who was one of the pioneer scientists in the use of blood transfusions! Explorers such as Sir Francis Drake originated from this amazing corner, and of course not forgetting our very own Frank Cottrell-Boyce who has authored some literary masterpieces, including the title at the centre of this project 'Ted Rules the World'.
This project is to publish 500 copies of a Cornish version of 'Ted Rules the World' or 'Ted a Rewl an Bys' to show the translated title, authored by Frank Cottrell-Boyce to be launched on the International Day for Protection of Children.
These books will be given to various places for free, so that they can be used with children to support their learning of the Cornish language and to promote the overall heritage.
Your 'Ted a Rewl an Bys' team includes:
Kensa Clemence - Jody Butler - Helen Peters - Vicky Charman - Carole Morley - Jody Roberts - Georgina Chiplin - Holly Bailey - Abbie Garland - Kimberly Pryor - Hayley Williams - Antoni Taylor and Michael Catlin.
