Treviglas School in Newquay is taking a bold step towards improving student focus, well-being, and social interaction by becoming the very first smartphone-free secondary school in Newquay.
To make this transition smooth, we need your help to install phone lockers for the new Year 7 intake.
This is a pivotal time for smartphone reform, and by giving what you can, you will be part of the pioneering movement and inspire other schools in Cornwall to follow suit.
Whilst it’s easy to list the multiple dangers of smartphones, let’s take a look at the positives:
A Smartphone Free School Means:
- Reduced Distractions! - Giving teens the chance to develop their passions and interests free from addictive algorithms results in better concentration and better grades.
- Better Mental Health for our Children - Kids who are addicted to smartphones are twice as likely to have anxiety, and three times as likely to have depression*
- Tech Savvy -Students are prepared for a balanced approach to technology. Being tech-savvy isn’t about scrolling through TikTok; it’s about knowing how to use technology productively, and in the right place at the right time.
- Less Stress for Teachers - Teachers spend so much of their day (up to two hours!) checking phones in bags, confiscating phones etc. Removing smartphones from schools means teachers can get on and teach your kids and maximise lesson time.
- Strengthening Real-Life Connections - Without a smartphone acting as a middleman, our kids gain essential life skills and they can forge deeper friendships.
- More Focus - Less time spent scrolling means more time for developing critical thinking, deep focus, and creative problem-solving.
- Healthier Kids - Teens without smartphones get longer, better-quality sleep. This improves brain function, emotional regulation and overall health and happiness.

The only barrier to making this happen is funding.
Most smartphone contracts are around £30-50 a month. Think of the money you’d save by not having to fund your child’s smartphone habit! You can opt for a “simple phone,” which will also save you money. With the money you save, can you throw some pennies in the pot to help support this vital campaign?
A new set of 180 lockers for year 7 will cost £2000.
That’s just £10 per every family of new year 7 starters. If we smash our target, we can buy more lockers for the rest of the school, meaning that the children at Treviglas will benefit from one of the best learning environments in Cornwall.
If we can reach half of our goal, there are grants from Newquay Town Council we can apply for, which will maximise the impact of your donation.
If this proves a success, we will then have the case study to lobby the powers-that-be to roll lockers out to all schools in Cornwall. This is just the beginning…
