Project Aim

Our aim is to raise £4,300 to help team GB fund their trip to the 2016 European Jodo Championships taking place in Switzerland.

Project Description

The British Jodo team are competing at the European Jodo Championships, Magglingen, Switzerland 2016 from 24-25 September 2016 and are aiming to raise £4,300 to cover the trip ( Currently there is no external funding available for the whole Jodo squad in the UK.

Last year at the European Jodo Championships in Sweden team GB won 8 medals between 13 participants sent to compete. Our UK squad won: team bronze, bronze for 4th dan, bronze for 2nd dan, fighting spirit for 5th dan, and fighting spirit for mudan. Full results can be found here:

We want to continue achieving medal success, however we need the funding support to achieve our outstanding results. So we are asking everyone and anyone, the martial arts community and businesses to support us by making a donation. Sending a full squad is essential for the development of Jodo in the UK; the majority of competitors are coaches teaching some of the future Jodo talent.

But what is Jodo?

Jodo is a Japanese martial art which involves using weapons, amongst others the jo (staff) and tachi (sword). This way of using the staff was devised by one master swordsman, Gonnosuke Katsukichi, specifically to defeat another, Miyamoto Musashi in the early 1600′s. It was founded approximately 400 years ago, however the first European competition started in 2002. Now over 18 countries compete by sending their own squads; judges are also sent to the competition by European countries and a delegation from the All Japan Kendo Federation (for more information: If you haven't seen it before, last years competition is available to watch here:

Who are we?

A 15 member squad (13 players, 1 squad trainer and 1 squad manager): Mark Snowdon and Rob Townson (mudan); Ally Mihaylova-Smith (squad manager) Abdul Oyede and Shakir Abdur-Rahman (1st dan); Jenni Wilding and Edward Marshall (2nd dan); William Heal, David Parker and Kristina Poslusna (3rd dan); Daniel Silk and Carlos Xilotl (4th dan); Stojanka Vidinic (5th dan); Harry Jones (6th dan squad trainer). Most of the squad consist of the gold and silver medalists from the UK Jodo Nationals competition 2016. We are extremely committed and several of the Many competitors train 1-3 sessions per week, at squad training (1 day) 5 times per year and at 6 training events (1-3 days) in the year.

Your support will get us there

As a team we need to fund £4,300 for travel, accommodation, training facilities, kit, and tournament fees with your help. Squad members will be paying an individual contribution themselves. Any money raised over our target will go to funding a squad to go to the European Jodo Championships 2017.

If you are a business and would be interested in making larger donations than our rewards cater for please get in touch. We have a rapidly growing social media network that can reach more than 1,800 people; there are numerous athletes, support crew and spectators involved in the 2016 European Championships, as the competition will be broadcast on YouTube making a larger sponsorship well worthwhile.

Your encouragement will get us there.

The team welcomes your messages of support and encouragement, please do leave a message or comment alongside any pledge.
