Team 50: Fundraising for Young Mums in Uganda

Aim

Arjita, Anamika, Harshitha, Rengfeng, Shantanu, Minghong & Sarth are raising funds to give young mums in Uganda the invaluable gift of HOPE!

We are a team of Bath University students fundraising to help The Paul Hodges Trust. All money raised will be used to fund their vocational training project in Uganda. 

This project provides young mums, who've been forced to drop out of school, the opportunity to complete a year-long tailoring apprenticeship. At the end, each young women is given her own sewing machine, to start a small business. This project costs £150 per woman and creates a real, sustainable and life-altering change. We are very grateful for any contribution you can make, big or small. Every pound will help to make a difference!

Tembe's story 

When Tembe was 13 her father died. Her mother, a subsistence farmer, struggled to look after Tembe and her 6 siblings. Tembe was forced to drop out of school - the family barely had enough to eat, never mind money for school fees and uniforms. When Tembe fell pregnant at 14 she was devastated. "I was so scared. Our family was struggling so much already. The child's daddy abandoned me. I wanted to go to school, but I'd made such a big mistake. I spent many hours everyday collecting plastics and scrap metal, but barely made 1000 shillings (20p). I couldn't imagine ever having the opportunity to be happy again, but I wanted to give my child a chance for something good." 

Through The Paul Hodges Trust, Tembe was selected to complete a 1-year tailoring apprenticeship. She has now graduated, received her own sewing machine and is running a small business. "I never thought I could get this second chance, but my life is going in the right direction now. I am earning money to look after my daughter. I've met other young women in the same position and I now have a real support network."

The Paul Hodges Trust was founded in 2018 to support the world's poorest women and girls. A big focus of our work is giving young mums living in poverty the training, resources and emotional support they need to survive and thrive. Through our projects, young women are able to realise their immense potential and build a better future for themselves and their children - breaking the cycle of poverty
