As part of my final year at university, I am designing a tattoo magazine that offers a more accurate reflection of modern day tattoos and those who chose to have them. The tattoo industry has developed considerably over the past decade and continues to progress at an extremely fast pace. What was once seen as a negative or rebellious act is now being recognised as a celebration of identity. However, mainstream tattoo magazines continue to portray the industry through grungy and hard-core imagery, making the industry seem intimidating and unapproachable even for those with an interest in tattoos.
Modern tattoo practices have resulted in an increase of extremely personal and unique designs, often influenced greatly by the customer and their preferences. This means that present-day tattoos hold more personal value than ever before. ‘Small Matters’ is a modern tattoo magazine that explores the significance of small tattoos, capturing the rich stories behind their design, and highlighting their worth to those to have them. My hope is that by portraying the tattoo industry in a much more positive and relatable way I can encourage people to consider their place within the tattoo industry and see tattoos for what they have become, not what they used to be.
I am hoping that this project, alongside other editorial work I am currently completing at university, will increase my opportunities within the publishing industry, as I would love to produce more printed design in the future.
