Whittington CC are sustaining our future by installing a Borehole & elevating club facilities with The Sky Deck & The Western Terrace

by Nigel Watson in Lichfield, Staffordshire, United Kingdom

We're still collecting donations

On the 23rd July 2023 we'd raised £25,386 with 146 supporters in 38 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

 New stretch target

The borehole is the first phase of our ambition to go completely 'Off Grid'. Additional money would be set aside for future projects which could include a Wind Turbine and a Ground Source Heat Pump.

Who are we?

Whittington Cricket Club is a vibrant family-centric community united by a shared passion for cricket. Diversity is at the heart of our ethos, and we take immense pride in catering to cricketers of all genders, ages, and abilities. We have five senior teams, including a female squad, and a staggering eight junior teams, including a flourishing girls' section. We have a wonderful ground in Whittington and welcome anyone to play, watch, or relax with a drink at our pavilion bar.

Friday night host our All Stars and Dynamos sessions, where over 70 of our youngest members enjoy their cricket journey with us and our enthusiastic team of activators. During the season, there is usually a game in motion on one of our two grounds.

We’re a tight-knit community club interwoven with the fabric of our village. With over 240 dedicated club members, a passionate team of 30+ volunteers, and one of the largest junior sections in the area our club enjoys a real sense of belonging and purpose.

Why are we crowdfunding?

Since the easing of the Pandemic, we have been working hard as a club to constantly improve our offering to our community. Over the past two seasons, we have made significant improvements to our facilities, attracted a growing number of members, and continue to aspire to embed deeper as the heart of our community.

We are focused on delivering goals to adopt renewable energy technologies and enhance the member and community experience in an environmentally sustainable way.

In order to take our club to the next step in our roadmaps, we have outlined three projects;

  • The Sky Deck; a raised premium viewing platform offering unparalleled views of the playing area, as well as providing a comfortable and safe place to socialise and enjoy the cricket.
  • The Western Terrace; A more traditional area of terracing for families to enjoy a picnic whilst watching the action.
  • The Borehole; Phase one of the club’s ambition to go 'off grid' and produce our own heating, electricity and water. The borehole will provide us with fresh water to irrigate the ground even during the hot and dry summer months.

How we’ll spend the money raised

We are planning to fully fund the Western Terrace and the Skylounge via this crowdfunding campaign, which we have costed at around £15,000. We have secured 60% of the funding to go ahead with the Borehole, but we still need a further £10,000 in order to make this happen.

Community impact

Our projects are designed to adopt renewable energy technologies and enhance the member and community experience. On match days and our club training nights, we attract a large number of families who enjoy our facilities socially with family and friends. The Western Terrace and Sky Deck will improve the quality of the experience, as well as allowing us to increasing our capacity. We will be able to provide a variety of experiences for community and youth groups that also use our facilities.

Our Borehole project will allow us to present a beautiful picture postcard of a cricket ground in an environmentally sustainable way. We are also looking to increase our environmental credentials, and we see the Borehole as an important first step and statement of intent to become completely 'off grid' and energy and services self-sufficient.
