We're still collecting donations

On the 30th September 2023 we'd raised £1,340 with 23 supporters in 44 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
We are the Rugby Football Club, a passionate and dedicated rugby club that is committed to fostering a strong sense of community and sportsmanship through our love for Rugby. Based at Webb Ellis Road, Rugby we are proud to be the ‘Home of Rugby Football’.
Our club is composed of a diverse group of players and supporters, ranging from mini and juniors to youth and adult groups plus the town’s only ladies team called the Lionesses. We are also proud to say that we have a strong record of success, having won numerous titles and accolades in local, regional and national competitions.
However, some years ago, an aborted takeover left the club in financial disarray. Worse still, the Lions were relegated to the bottom of the RFU playing structure, and since then have struggled to get back on an even keel – both financially and on the playing front.
With our unique history and heritage, we have been privileged to receive an invitation to take part in the inaugural Amateur Rugby World Cup, running alongside the Rugby World Cup in France in September 2023.
Determined to seize this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the Lions have mobilised a team from across the town of Rugby. The players are partially funding the trip, but we need to raise a substantial amount of money for flights, accommodation and kit.
Our major and most immediate focus is to fulfil our obligations and represent our town and country to the best of our ability.
Cost per player is estimated at a minimum of £1500 each. This will cover travel, accommodation and playing kit. The organisers have budgeted for a party of 35 players from each club. The Lions have started various fundraising initiatives and are hoping to raise up to 30% of the total, leaving us to raise a further £30,000.00 – which is our target for this campaign.
Any monies raised will be spent 100% towards this Rugby Lions fund.
200 years ago in 1823, at a school football match on the Close at Rugby School, William Webb Ellis ‘picked up the football, and with a fine disregard for the rules, ran with it’ - inventing the game of rugby football!
The Rugby Football Club have been invited to take part in the inaugural Amateur Rugby World Cup, which is running alongside the RWC 2023 in France. 20 teams from all the rugby playing nations throughout the world have been invited and the Rugby Lions will be representing England. Most matches and parts of the tournament will be televised worldwide. The impact in the town that gave its name to the game will be huge, not just for us locals but throughout the UK and indeed worldwide! Further information and sponsorship opportunities can be provided.
The tournament website is here.
