Who are we?
Founded in 1935, Sunderland Yacht Club has been helping people enjoy our beautiful coastline for decades, carrying on the tradition of what was termed 'Aquatic Events' at Sunderland's first official sailing regatta back in 1837.
Today the Club helps people get out on the water in a variety of ways - from yachts and dinghies to paddleboards, kayaks, and RIBs. Beach-lovers will be familiar with the distinctive sight of the fleet making its way past Roker and Whitburn and we're a friendly, family orientated club perfect for anyone with any interest in watersports - from complete beginners, competitive racers, or those looking for a gentle pootle along the coast.
We're not just for members either, with the club hosting open days for community groups such as Veterans in Crisis and supporting wider city events like the Sunderland Tri, in addition to training days and open race series for people around the region and beyond.
Never been sailing? Keen to give it a try yourself? Pop along to the clubhouse on a Saturday morning and let's have a chat about getting you out on the water, or email [email protected] to find out more
Why are we crowdfunding?
A powerboat is critical to the club, acting as a safe 'first step' onto the water for people who are nervous or have access needs, particularly during our open days, supports training and racing, and events at both a club and national level.
The club's previous boat is no longer fit for purpose - aged, unreliable and unstable, we spend more time bailing it out and fixing it than using it. Its 42 year old diesel engine was environmentally unfriendly and the cost of repairs every year was starting to equal the value of the boat.
We'd like to replace it with something newer and more environmentally friendly that will allow the club to thrive, supporting our members, community, and the city.
With your support we will...
- Continue to get people aged 8-80 (and then some!) out on the water
- Give more people a chance to try sailing and watersports
- Help people engage in sports that will benefit their body and mind
- Have a boat that we can use for coaching and training - the 2023 Musto Skiff Champion sails out of Sunderland! (https://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/meet-sunderlands-recently-crowned-uk-sailing-champion-bill-maughan-4353947)
- Help the club grow and thrive
- Support sport and clubs in the wider city (https://www.sunderland.gov.uk/article/23845/Yacht-Club-helps-make-sure-Triathlon-weekend-is-plain-sailing)
