Renovate community buildings to improve sustainability; increase wider community access for young people to develop life skills and have fun
June 2021 - A HUGE THANK YOU, to those people who have pledged to support us to date. We are on our way to gatehring the funds to make our project happen and very excited!
We know that Sea Cadets makes a massive difference to the young people who attend. It increases their skills, but more importantly their resilience and confidence in what can be a difficult world to navigate for young people. Avonmouth Unit serves a wide area, drawing young people from Lawrence Weston, Shirehampton, Sea Mills and Pill, giving structure and skills that are likely to be of use to the young people in the area of Avonmouth docks and beyond. The HQ is also used for other units to share in training opportunities, giving the facilities even more importance.
We really want the ethos and spirit of Sea Cadets to be there for this and future generations, but keeping up with modernising the buildings is challenging. Making them fit for purpose in the 21st century takes time, effort and money. We have a willing band of volunteers who do most of the general up keep and we get the cadets involved when we can, which increases their skills- painting, gardening, maintenance jobs, etc. We look to support local business when we need to employ others to undertake jobs that we can't do and seek to be sustainable in the developments that we make and the people we work with.
At the moment, we really need to complete some fire proofing, so that we can use the buildings for overnight stays ( another aspect of confidence building for young people) and sort out our somewhat archaic hot water system. In the future we would love to be solar/ wind powered, that is on our to do list, but essentials first.
