Scott Turnbull Presents... Surreally Good – An Edinburgh Fringe Crowdfunder

Hello! I’m Scott Turnbull – award winning actor, theatre maker, and visual artist. I blend absurdist comedy, clowning, and heartfelt storytelling while celebrating working class culture and the North East.

With a background in acting and writing, I’ve built a reputation for sharp, surprising shows full of wit, warmth, and visual flair. My performances often use hand-drawn illustrations, manipulated live through an overhead projector, to tell epic tales that are both surreal and sincere.

“Amongst the chaos and the bizarre, there’s comfort in the familiarity of a Teesside twang and Mighty Boosh-esque characters in his work, which makes his humour so accessible.” – NARC Magazine

I’ve written and performed shows including Where Do All The Dead Pigeons Go?, Tales From The Smog, and Unexpected Item in the Bagging Area. I run community-driven events like Daft Cult Film Club, Teeny Tiny Cinema, and clowning workshops. I’m an Associate Artist at ARC Stockton and, in 2024, I was named Tees Valley Artist of the Year.

People often compare my stuff to The Mighty Boosh or the humour of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer – which makes sense. I’m basically their lovechild: Bob’s Northern charm and friendly oddness, mixed with Vic’s love of daft costumes, fake ’taches and giant shoes.

My work resonates beyond traditional theatre spaces – whether I’m performing in working men’s clubs (yes, I once did a meat raffle dressed as a Greek God), or supporting musicians like Amelia Coburn with folk-pop tales spun through surreal visuals and heartfelt laughs.

Last year, I was named one of Tees Valley’s Artists of the Year. That gave me the time and support to develop new ideas – including my latest show: Scott Turnbull Presents… Surreally Good.

What is Surreally Good?

It’s a live comic-book sketch show that weaves together everything I love: storytelling, drawing, silly voices, songs, surreal characters, and moving moments inspired by life in the North East. I’m taking it to Summerhall at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, and I need your help to get there.

Why I'm asking for support:

The Fringe is an amazing opportunity, but it’s also famously pricey. We’ve already raised over £8000 (thank you) – but we still need to raise more to make this dream a reality.

Here’s where your support will go:

  • Production costs: Rehearsals and materials
  • Stage manager: to keep the chaos semi-contained.
  • Venue fees: Including ticket commissions and Fringe registration.
  • Marketing & PR: Posters, ads, PR support – getting bums on seats!
  • Travel and accommodation: For me and my stage manager (and, Oasis are playing that month, so it’s extra pricey…)

How you can help:

Even a couple of quid makes a huge difference – honestly. And if you can’t donate, you can still help by sharing this campaign far and wide. Word of mouth is powerful.

We've got 27 days. It's all or nothing.

Let's take Surreally Good to Edinburgh – and share the voice of the North East with the world.

Cheers for reading,
Scott x
