Aim

Ongoing support and maintenance of the Alconbury Recreation Field

Since 1980, ARFC has looked after the Recreation Field for everyone in the local area. Our purpose is simple: to provide and maintain recreational and leisure facilities that make life better in Alconbury, Alconbury Weston and the neighbouring Huntingdonshire villages.

In the mid-1980s, local volunteers built the Pavilion, which has been the centre of village sport and social life ever since. The site has grown a lot since then. We've added a second set of changing rooms, a children's play area, extra storage, six more acres of land for grass pitches, a floodlit all-weather pitch and an outdoor gym. All of this was paid for by reinvesting the charity's income, by grants and by the generosity of local people.

ARFC is a registered charity (no. 279991). It is run by a board of volunteer trustees who give their time to keep the field safe, well maintained and open to everyone.

What we provide

  • The Pavilion: a function room, kitchen and social space for clubs, community groups, events and private hire
  • Changing rooms: two sets, with showers and toilets
  • Grass pitches: football and cricket pitches, used for league fixtures, training and casual play
  • Floodlit artificial grass pitch: an all-weather surface for training and small-sided games all year round
  • Children's play area: a safe space for younger children, used every day by local families
  • Outdoor gym: fitness equipment that's free for anyone to use
  • On-site parking: for match days and community events

Who uses the field

The Recreation Field is home to grassroots sport and community life in the area:

  • Football: Alconbury Colts
  • MUGA: Many different user groups, from Bootcamp, Youth football and groups of friends.
  • Cricket: local teams and junior cricket
  • Community groups: the Over 60s Club, the Indoor Bowling Club and the Women's Institute
  • Families and residents: using the playground, outdoor gym and open space
  • Events: fetes, fun days, fundraisers, private parties and our community fireworks display
