With your support we can continue to help all those in our community - through food support, social inclusion, wellbeing activity & baking.

by Gail Lawler in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom

We are a social enterprise and a community bakery. We employ 16 people on the real living wage and a quarter of our staff are neuro-diverse/ have mental health issues.

We are a commercial - not-for-profit - bakery - which means anything we make above paying our bills and wages - is given back to the community.

Currently, we spend approximately £50,000 a year (based on 2023) on providing this support - mainly through trading income and donations - occasionally we get a grant to fund specific projects. We have found that the need for our services and community involvement is growing and it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide this increased support based solely on trading. Through providing this support we are reducing the equality gap - levelling up communities through food equality and providing well-being and social inclusion opportunities which lead to healthier and happier communities and ones where people are more likely to have financial inclusion.

At Big River Bakery we provide good food that is affordable for all. A basic need that everyone has a right to. We do not judge anyone - and we don't want to turn anyone away who needs our support.

We provide:

Daily free food for anyone who needs it

Free Wednesday lunches

Free daily breakfasts to local school in term time

Free community baking sessions - all ages and abilities

Free well being - creative arts - based workshops

Weekly free UK-wide Kindness Cookie (to promote kindness)

Keeping the cost of food in our shop as affordable as possible

Promoting heritage through National Stottie Cake Week
