Aim

Support The Scarlett Letters staff fighting for job security, dignity and respect.

We, the booksellers at Scarlett Letters Bookshop, are currently in an open dispute with our employer and have decided to ballot for strike action.

We’ve unionised with United Voices of the World (UVW) and have demanded the basics: job security, sick pay, and transparency on the bookshop’s finances. We’ve been met with refusal, threats of having our hours cut, responsibilities stripped and staff laid off.

We are all on zero-hour contracts and simply being in this dispute puts our jobs at risk. Our employer has the power to stop giving us shifts at any time; that’s exactly why we’re demanding guaranteed fixed-hour contracts.

If our employer does not meet our demands, we will have to go on strike. Until then, we’re more vulnerable than ever and we need your help.

Please donate to our hardship fund to support us in case of financial suffering during our industrial dispute. This includes supporting us if we experience homelessness in the course of the dispute or with money lost due to strike action.

What happens to the money if we win?

If we aren’t dismissed or cut off and this fund isn’t needed to cover lost wages or other hardships associated with this dispute, the funds will go to UVW to become part of their strike fund for other workers in similar situations!
