Aim

USPUK aims to raise £5,000 to launch a 12-month pilot project supporting Afghan families as they prepare for the Life in the UK Test.

Aim
USPUK aims to raise £5,000 to launch a 12-month pilot project supporting Afghan families as they prepare for the Life in the UK Test.

Many Afghans who arrived in the UK through evacuation and resettlement schemes in 2021 are expected to become eligible for British citizenship over the coming months and years. For many families displaced by war and conflict, this represents an important milestone in rebuilding their lives and securing their future in the UK.

Why we are asking for your support
Navigating the citizenship process can be challenging. Many families are unsure where to begin, what the requirements are, or how to prepare for the Life in the UK Test. For larger households and low-income families, the costs involved can create additional barriers.

We have already developed a Life in the UK information pack and are working on translated versions to make information more accessible. Through this pilot project, we will continue developing practical resources, deliver information workshops, and provide one-to-one guidance to help families prepare for this important step.

How the funding will be used
We are aiming to raise £5,000 to:

  • Support up to 10 low-income families with the cost of the Life in the UK Test, helping to remove a financial barrier for families preparing for citizenship.
  • Deliver up to three Life in the UK information workshops over the next 12 months, including venue, materials and participant support costs.
  • Develop translated resources and easy-to-access information to help families better understand the citizenship process.
  • Provide one-to-one consultations and guidance for individuals and families who need additional support.

Why trust USPUK
Since launching our Afghan Project in 2023, USPUK has delivered more than 1,400 consultations and enquiries, supported hundreds of individuals and families, and developed practical resources to help people rebuild their lives after being forced to flee conflict and instability.

Our team combines professional expertise with lived experience of displacement and resettlement, allowing us to provide trusted, practical and culturally informed support to the communities we serve.

The impact
Through this 12-month pilot project, we aim to support at least 100 individuals through information sessions, workshops, one-to-one guidance and practical resources related to the Life in the UK Test and British citizenship.

Within this wider group, up to 10 low-income families will be direct beneficiaries of a small support fund to help cover the cost of the Life in the UK Test. We anticipate these families will be among those facing the greatest financial barriers to progressing on their citizenship journey.

This pilot will help us better understand the level of demand and shape future support for Afghan families as increasing numbers become eligible for British citizenship in the years ahead.
