Any extra money would go into the UVW strike fund to further support the care workers and cleaners as well as other low-paid, precarious and migrant workers who are members of UVW and taking industrial action for a living wage and improved T&Cs.
The dispute
Care workers and cleaners at Sage nursing home in Golders Green North London have been left with no choice but to go on strike for a living wage and dignified working conditions and they need your support.
These essential, front line workers have risked their lives to care for the elderly and vulnerable throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, but in spite of all their hard work and despite several attempts to negotiate with their employer, Sage's trustees continue to pay them poverty wages.
They earn between £8.72 - £9.60 per hour. Far below what is needed to live a dignified life in London; one of the most expensive cities on earth and the most expensive city in the UK.
They have also been left without full pay sick pay, which means they are often forced to choose between their health and the wellbeing of the residents they care for or paying the rent and bills.
The workers' demands
Backed by their union United Voices of the World (UVW), the workers are fighting for a living wage of £12 per hour and the same sick pay and annual leave as NHS employees, as well as unsocial hours pay and a collective voice at work.
They have also come together to make sure management finally listen to their concerns over bullying, discrimination and the continued worsening of their working conditions.
But on every issue Sage's trustees have refused to meaningfully negotiate and the workers have now been left with no choice but to go on strike.
A win for them is a win for all
This is the first-time care workers have gone on strike to demand an end to poverty pay, and the same sick pay and annual leave with NHS workers - if they were to win it would set a historic precedent for other care workers to follow.
Sage's trustees have tried to justify the poor working conditions and pay by saying this is the norm across the social care sector and they are right, it is.
But if you want to be part of the fightback which says that poverty pay and precarity is a choice and that it is time for key workers to be treated with equality, respect and dignity, now is the time.
