Aim: SAVE BRICK LANE wants the local community's NEED FOR HOMES to be put first in the redevelopment of the Truman Brewery

Launched originally to stop the Truman Brewery building an UGLY SHOPPING MALL, the Save Brick Lane campaign achieved great success, but now the Brewery wants a MASSIVE CORPORATE PLAZA OF OFFICE BLOCKS as well - we need to challenge this too. We need to raise money to fund exhibitions and events, to produce handbills and films, to spread the word and mobilise the community against this exploitative development.

We want the needs of the local community for genuinely affordable homes and workspaces to be prioritised in the redevelopment of the Truman Brewery. We reject this soulless corporate style development that will push up rents on Brick Lane, driving out the small independents and undermining the long-established Bangladeshi community.

THE SAVE BRICK LANE CAMPAIGN ISSUED THIS STATEMENT on 17th JULY 2025:

Brick Lane under Threat - Save Brick Lane Campaign Group Calls for Community Action against Truman Estate at 6pm on 31 JULY 2025 at TOWER HAMLETS TOWN HALL

●     Council to determine Truman Brewery planning applications 31 July

●     Save Brick Lane call for day of action.

●     Having forced the withdrawal of the council’s Spitalfields & Banglatown Masterplan, Truman Estates are now appealing the applications to the Planning Inspectorate

The Save Brick Lane campaign is calling on residents, community groups, and supporters from across London to join a Community Day of Action on Thursday, 31st July at the Town Hall, to oppose the Truman Brewery planning applications. This will help defend against a massive development which focuses on reaping maximum profits with no benefits for residents and local communities. The large expanse of land could potentially deliver 345 social housing but instead only 6 units of social housing is proposed in this office-led development.

At stake is nothing less than the future of Brick Lane and its community. Important amenities and shops for residents will be threatened. Independent shops will face rent increases as they compete with high-street style commercial entrants.

The Save Brick Lane campaign group has championed a Community-led Masterplan which focuses on social housing, community spaces and affordable commercial units for small businesses. With community support, Tower Hamlets Council Masterplan was developed as part of Mayor Lutfur Rahman’s manifesto promise and adopted in Sept 2024 after a year of public consultation.

The Tower Hamlets Mayor recognised that Brick Lane needs protection. He said “we will end the slow destruction of our local heritage, most grimly represented by the Truman Brewery on world-famous Brick Lane being handed over to luxury developers”. [Jacobin, May 2022]

Tower Hamlets Council has repeatedly recognised that creating more social housing, with a proper mix of unit sizes for local families, is an absolute priority. The Spitalfields and Banglatown Masterplan reflects this vision – placing housing, community facilities, and open space at the heart of any future development. But these priorities are being bulldozed by developers determined to carve up Brick Lane for commercial gain.

●     Soon after its adoption in September 2024, the Council was forced to withdraw the Masterplan under threat of legal action by the developers. The ideas are now being incorporated into the new Local Plan.

●     On 31 July the Council Strategic Development Committee will meet to consider the applications and make a recommendation to the Planning Inspectorate

●     Planning Inspectorate Public Inquiry in the Autumn.
