New stretch target

Expand the partnership to provide childcare to 15 refugee mums for 6 months!

Hello there

For those of you who don't know us yet, we are The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN), a social enterprise that provides support to refugee entrepreneurs in the creation and development of their businesses, providing services throughout three stages of entrepreneurial process:

- business exploration
- business start-up
- business growth.

Since 2021 we have worked alongside Bubble Childcare to remove barriers for refugee mothers, who are members of our female founders group HerTERN.
Affordable childcare is one of the most pressing issues for refugee parents in our community:

In particular, refugee mums face additional hurdles, preventing them from building their livelihoods for themselves & their families. These barriers were exacerbated for our community members by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the height of the pandemic in October 2020, the average revenue reduction for trading businesses was 61%, with a further 15% of businesses that had gone bankrupt and were forced to stop trading. As well as these detrimental impacts to business outcomes, at TERN we saw a sharp increase in unemployment, which rose by 40%, impacting the personal income and financial security of more than half of our our community.

We knew we needed to take action and create new support options for our community members. One arm of support we created was our female founders group HerTERN. Her TERN was born out of the crucial need for a support network for single mums and business women who faced the additional hurdles or running their businesses full time, whilst also having to juggle home schooling their kids. Many of the mums were experiencing burnout, alongside unprecedented levels of guilt and overwhelm. We started to gather as a small group to support one another and talk about these experiences. During these online gatherings, we soon realised that finding free childcare was essential for helping the ladies to bring some balance back into their lives - for themselves, their families and their businesses.

That's why we paired up with Bubble, the UK's biggest on demand child care platform! Our pilot supported 7 refugee mums, enabling them to book quality childcare in minutes from the bubble app. This was used to book 119 free sits, freeing up time for the refugee mums to attend our programmes & events, allowing them some time to themselves to work on developing their businesses.

This is where you come in!!

This year, we are expanding our pilot to 15 refugee mums and we need to raise £3,000 to provide free childcare over 6 months. This support is essential for allowing mums in our community to continue to rebuild after the pandemic and get their businesses back on track.
