Our Journey to Empowering New Mums: The Birth of Mumie
In May 2021, amidst the chaos of maternity leave and personal experiences of childbirth, we—Laura and Sarah, both GPs and new mums—faced a stark reality. The struggle to find reliable and comprehensive information on postnatal recovery was real and daunting. Clumps of hair in hand, we realised the overwhelming focus on the baby's well-being overshadowed the mother's health journey, sparking misinformation and a worrying lack of support for new mothers.
Compelled by our findings and personal challenges, we conducted a survey amongst new mums. The results were eye-opening: 86% reported unexpected physical and emotional changes during the postnatal period. This gap in support and information drove us to action.
Fuelled by a desire to enrich and support women’s health after childbirth, we developed Mumie—a web-based app designed to equip new mothers with crucial information and support systems to navigate motherhood confidently. Our platform draws upon critical insights from authoritative sources such as the MBBRACE-UK reports, which highlight ongoing disparities in maternal health outcomes, and the Women’s Health Strategy, which advocates for more tailored healthcare approaches for women.
Recent studies, including a comprehensive analysis by The Lancet, underline the necessity of enhanced postnatal care frameworks to prevent complications and support long-term health. These insights, combined with harrowing statistics from the latest Birth Trauma Report, which reveals the profound impact of inadequate postnatal care, underscore the urgent need for services like Mumie.
Our efforts have not gone unnoticed. The innovation of Mumie was recognised with a Fast Start Grant from Innovate UK, and we’ve been active participants in the SETSquared Business Accelerator Programme. In April 2023, our commitment to enhancing maternal health was further acknowledged with a Business Award at the Exeter Impact Awards.
We launched our MVP in 2023 and have since been rigorously reviewing and testing it. As we refine Mumie and expand its features, we remain deeply committed to addressing the needs and wants of our users. However, the road ahead is long, and to sustain and scale our efforts, we urgently need your support
This crowdfunding campaign aims to underwrite ongoing operational costs and ensure that Mumie can continue to serve new mothers during this critical phase of our development. By backing this project, you're not just funding an app; you're uplifting mothers across the UK, empowering them with knowledge, and reshaping the narrative around maternal health.
Join us in making a tangible difference. Support Mumie, support mothers.
