One of our cleaner members from Peru, Mercedes Espinoza Durand de Palacios, has sadly passed away from cancer leaving behind her husband of 40 years Carlos and her two grown-up children. Carlos, also a United Voices of the World (UVW) union member, has been unable to work for a year because of being the victim of a brutal mugging in Bermondsey which left him seriously injured. Carlos and his daughter Susana cared for Mercedes until the very end.
Mercedes and Carlos were life-long companions, who got married in Lima 40 years ago, when they were barely 20 years old. They emigrated to Europe in 2005, first to Spain and then to the UK, looking to give a better life to their children. “Mercedes was so cheerful and happy, such a good and kind person. My life with her was like a dream come true, a marvellous marriage. We were both cleaners here because of the language barrier, although we had worked in computer and secretarial jobs before. It's very difficult to learn English when you work unsociable hours with Latin Americans alone. I’d like to honour her memory by fulfilling her dream that we both learn English and get better jobs so we can better ourselves and our lives. Because life is precious. I’m also trying to set up a Facebook group to help people who have gone through this kind of trauma in Peru, where there is so little help for sufferers of cancer and their families.”
Mercedes got diagnosed with cancer 11 years ago in Spain where she received her first treatment and a partial breast removal operation. Unfortunately the cancer returned during the pandemic in 2020 once she was in the UK. Despite a full mastectomy, radio and chimio therapies, it spread to her liver and her brain and it was fatal. Their daughter Susana is still in full time education and lives with her dad. They both took care of Mercedes until she died at home in Susana’s arms.
“It’s been so hard”, Carlos told us “She was so ill and was hospitalised for about five months in a row. But it came to a point when the doctors couldn’t do any more for her and she wanted to die at home. In the meantime, I was assaulted by two young men in the street in Bermondsey, in central London as I was on my way to work in September 2021. They were after my mobile, which they took, but they fractured my left leg in various places and I’m still not able to walk properly. I haven’t been able to return to work, so we are living on Universal Credit at the moment.”
We are asking UVW union members and supporters to give money to ensure that Carlos and Susana can get by during this difficult time. The funds will primarily go to cover the funeral and other care associated costs.

Unx de nuestrxs miembrxs más antiguxs de Perú, Mercedes Espinoza Durand de Palacios, ha fallecido tristemente de cáncer dejando atrás a su marido de 40 años Carlos y a sus dos hijxs. Carlos, también miembro del sindicato Voces Unidas del mundo (UVW por sus siglas en inglés), llevaba un año sin poder trabajar por haber sido víctima de un brutal robo en Bermondsey que le dejó gravemente herido. Carlos y su hija Susana cuidaron de Mercedes hasta el final.
Mercedes y Carlos eran compañerxs de toda la vida; se casaron en Lima hace 40 años cuando apenas tenían 20. Emigraron a Europa en 2005, primero a España y luego al Reino Unido, buscando dar una vida mejor a sus hijxs. "Mercedes era tan alegre y feliz, una persona tan buena y amable. Mi vida con ella fue como un sueño hecho realidad, un matrimonio maravilloso. Los dos éramos limpiadores aquí por la barrera del idioma, aunque antes habíamos trabajado en informática y secretaría. Es muy difícil aprender inglés cuando trabajas en horarios intempestivos sólo con latinoamericanxs. Me gustaría honrar su memoria cumpliendo su sueño de que ambxs aprendiéramos inglés y consiguiéramos mejores trabajos para poder mejorarnos a nosotrxs mismxs y nuestras vidas. Porque la vida es preciosa. También estoy intentando crear un grupo en Facebook para ayudar a la gente que ha pasado por este tipo de traumas en Perú, donde hay tan poca ayuda para lxs enfermos de cáncer y sus familias."
A Mercedes le diagnosticaron el cáncer hace 11 años en España, donde recibió su primer tratamiento y una operación de extirpación parcial de mama. Desgraciadamente, el cáncer volvió a aparecer durante la pandemia de 2020, ya afincada en el Reino Unido. A pesar de una mastectomía completa, radio y quimioterapia, el cáncer se extendió a su hígado y su cerebro. Su hija Susana sigue estudiando a tiempo completo y vive con su padre. Ambxs cuidaron de Mercedes hasta que murió en casa en brazos de Susana.
"Ha sido muy duro", nos cuenta Carlos "Estuvo muy enferma y hospitalizada unos cinco meses seguidos. Pero llegó un momento en que lxs médicxs no pudieron hacer más por ella y quiso morir en casa. Mientras tanto, yo fui asaltado por dos jóvenes en la calle en Bermondsey, en el centro de Londres, cuando me dirigía al trabajo en septiembre de 2021. Iban a por mi móvil, que por supuesto se llevaron, pero me fracturaron la pierna izquierda por completo. Sigo en rehabilitación con limitaciones al caminar, así que no he podido volver a trabajar y de momento vivimos de ayudas públicas (Universal Credit)".
Pedimos a lxs miembrxs y simpatizantes de UVW que hagan un donativo para que Carlos y Susana puedan salir adelante en estos momentos difíciles. Los fondos se destinarán principalmente a cubrir los gastos del funeral y cuidados asociados.
