What We're Raising Money For

Jura is a small island with a big heart — just 258 people live here, stretched along one long road. While music has always been part of island life, opportunities to take part in theatre have been few and far between. That’s why we created Jura Amateur Dramatics (JamDram) in 2022.

Since then, we’ve staged four productions — including one written by a local resident. In our most recent play, around 25 islanders (10% of the population!) took part both on and off stage. From actors and stagehands to young people running lighting and sound, drama has given us the chance to learn new skills, gain confidence, and bring people together — especially in the long winter months.

But there’s one problem: we don’t have a stage!   And our next play is in March!

Right now, we make do with an old dance platform propped up on pallets. It’s wobbly, time-consuming to build, and limits what we can create. A portable stage would change everything — making our performances safer, more professional, and opening the door to workshops, youth theatre, and community events across two islands -  Jura and Islay.

This is the dream!

Why Portability Matters

The stage comes in lightweight 1-metre sections that fit through standard doors and into vans. This means it can travel easily on the ferry between islands and be configured to any size for different venues.

Groups across both Jura & Islay could use it for:

  • Jura Music Festival
  • Islay, Jura & Colonsay Show
  • Feis Ile events
  • Highland dancing
  • Distillery functions
  • Jazz Festival performances
  • Weddings,
  • Ceilidhs
  • School performances
  • Community concerts

The sections pack down for storage and require no specialist tools to assemble.

"Not every village hall or venue has adequate staging, and mainland hire costs are prohibitive once you factor in transport," says Pi Davidson of JamDram. "A shared portable stage that moves between our islands just makes sense.

Life on Jura isn’t always easy. We're a doubly insulated island, which means its 2 ferries to get to us by car, we face ferry disruptions, long travel times, and fewer opportunities to access cultural events on Islay or the mainland. That makes local arts even more important."

JamDram helps to tackle rural isolation, builds confidence, and creates joy for our community. Audiences have come from Jura, Islay, and even further afield to see our plays — proof that live theatre here matters.

With your help, we can give Jura the stage it deserves.
