We’re supporting 15 migrant and women of colour journalists to tell powerful stories and build a more inclusive and representative media.

by Migrant Women Press in Glasgow, Glasgow City, United Kingdom

We are Migrant Women Press

We are a migrant women-led independent media organisation connecting women from diverse backgrounds navigating life in a new place to amplify their voices through journalism.

By placing the diverse voices of migrant and racialised women at the centre of our reporting, features, interviews, opinions and first-hand pieces, we offer an intersectional perspective on migration discussions, confronting the misrepresentation of migrant communities and the systemic lack of diversity in the media landscape.

 Why We Need Your Support

We will support 15 migrant and women of colour - recent graduates, freelance and aspiring journalists - to uplift their skills and produce impactful stories about critical issues affecting our communities through a six-month fellowship. Following this project, we will provide ongoing support to help them break into the media industry.

The program will offer mentorship, training, and expert-led workshops to equip fellows with the skills needed for good journalism and impactful storytelling. Each fellow will receive fair pay to produce well-researched, in-depth features, investigations and solutions-focused stories, challenging misinformation, shedding light on the most critical issues of our time and inspiring change.

The stories published by the women funded through this project will inform and promote a more humanised discussion of critical issues, empowering people with information and engaging discussion about various issues, including employment, health and well-being, arts, the environment, and social justice, from an intersectional and solutions-oriented perspective.

Our ambition is to support all 15 women in upskilling their skills, building confidence, and finding career opportunities in media and communications through increased funding for Migrant Women Press. We will work in collaboration with our network of dedicated independent media,  third-sector and academic partnerships.

The project will culminate in a special print edition featuring their work.

Spotlight on Impact: What We’ve Achieved So Far

By focusing on the diverse voices of women in our reporting, features, interviews, opinions, and first-hand pieces, we offer an intersectional perspective on migration discussions, confront the misrepresentation of migrant communities and the systemic lack of diversity in the media landscape.

This year, we proudly celebrate our 5th anniversary. For a volunteer-run organisation transitioning to a social enterprise, operating with no core funding, what we've accomplished is truly remarkable:

  • We’ve supported 80 women from diverse backgrounds from over 30 countries to produce 200+ original articles—all published on our website and free to access.
  • We’ve partnered with 26 grassroots, local, and international organisations to amplify the voices of women from marginalised communities.
  • We’ve built a trusted, majority migrant- and women of colour-led media platform—grounded in lived experience and community care.
  • We’ve reported on stories often ignored by mainstream media, including the experiences of undocumented women, migrant health and social care workers, the climate crisis’s impact on rural women, mental health in migrant communities, the cost of living crisis impact on asylum seeker women, migrant women in business, politics, activism, and the arts.
  • We’ve helped young women into employment, providing volunteer roles that boosted their skills, portfolios, and confidence.
  • We led a powerful 16 Days Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence, commissioning 16 diverse migrant writers and offering trauma-informed training to spotlight survivor stories through a migrant and racial justice lens.
  • Most importantly, we’ve created a space of belonging—where migrant women and women of colour can share their stories on their own terms, with dignity and agency.

And we’ve done all of this without corporate funding, paid ads, or wealthy backers—powered instead by volunteers, small grants, and the unwavering support of our community.

Now, we need your help to take this work further.

What Your Donation Will Support

Every pound you give goes a long way. In fact, 98p of every £1 is directly invested in supporting women from diverse backgrounds through training, mentoring, and impactful storytelling.

Here's how your donation can make a difference:

  • £25 funds one hour of one-to-one mentorship with an expert journalist or editor, providing editorial feedback, career advice, and support for emerging journalists.
  • £50 covers travel expenses for a fellow to conduct research and interviews on issues relevant to the public interest, from an intersectional perspective.
  • £150 provides a 2-hour expert-led workshop for all 15 fellows on fact-checking, helping them learn how to verify the factual accuracy of questioned reporting and statements, and counter AI-driven misinformation.
  • £350 fully supports one woman’s 6-month fellowship, enabling her to research, develop, attend training, receive one-to-one mentorship, and publish a high-impact story that reaches and resonates with underrepresented communities.
  • £500 funds trauma-informed reporting training, accredited for journalists, students, and media professionals, for all fellows. This ensures they can report responsibly, protect themselves and their sources, and handle sensitive topics with care.
  • £1,000 is a life-changing donation. This funds the entire fellowship experience for two women, supporting them to research and write one impactful story each, build their skills, confidence, and professional network, and better prepare for opportunities in media.  Your support will also cover specialist training on investigative techniques and ethical journalism, to help all 15 fellows dive deep into challenging issues and be prepared to report with accuracy, ethics and responsibly.

About The Media and Political Landscape- And How We’re Changing It

We are a newsroom led by migrant women and women of colour—operating in a world where migrants are scapegoated, women are silenced, and racialised communities are pushed to the margins.

As anti-immigrant sentiment grows, racial injustice deepens, and gender inequality persists, trusted, public-interest journalism has never been more essential. Yet, our voices remain underrepresented—or misrepresented—by mainstream media.

We exist to change that.

Migrant Women Press is building a media space where diverse women lead the conversation, report from lived experience, and challenge dominant narratives. We bring untold stories to light, offering the nuance, depth, and truth that traditional media too often neglects.

In a time when independent journalism is under threat and funding is increasingly scarce, our work is both urgent and vulnerable.

We’re transitioning from a volunteer-run initiative into a sustainable, independent newsroom—and to keep doing this vital work, we need your support.
