The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team needs to replace an end of life response vehicle with a new one.
by Holme Valley Mountain Rescue in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom
On the 9th March 2023 we'd raised £3,445 with 73 supporters in 49 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.
One of our two response vehicles which takes rescue specialist equipment to casualties to assist our volunteers carry out their duties has come to the end of its life and requires replacement.
Our 21-year-old Landrover Defender response vehicle is costing just over £2000 in maintenance a year, in addition to the normal running costs of fuel, servicing and MOT. This annual expenditure on the vehicle will increase further in the coming years. It has spent the equivalent of nearly a year under repair and maintenance in the previous years of service.
The Solution:
The team is now fundraising to acquire a more modern vehicle that surpasses the current vehicle’s abilities in the field, provide greater reliability, as well as presenting a more modern professional image.
This is an opportunity to create a vehicle that will allow us to manage operations more effectively, respond better, work slicker... and ultimately help to make a difference to more peoples' lives, well into the future.
The new vehicle will be a specialist conversion of a ISUZU D-Max Pick-up Truck. We successfully purchased a similar vehicle in 2017, which has resulted in the team being more operationally flexible. It has a higher load capacity, enabling us to transport four volunteers as a hill party, plus equipment. This provides more resources on scene more quickly than the previous vehicle. The more economical engine also results saving in running costs. Many of our rescues occur on the urban fringe of West Yorkshire, travelling by motorway to these locations is smoother and safer with a modern vehicle.
The Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team (HVMRT) is a volunteer-based search and rescue organisation based in Marsden, near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
The team has over 50 members who are on call to assist those in difficulty, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, whatever the weather.
The team covers an area of over 1,000 square kilometres of diverse terrain, ranging from rugged open moorland and crags to rural and semi-urban areas, and varying in altitude between 7m and nearly 600m above sea level. This area of operations roughly comprises the southern half of West Yorkshire, and the team operates under the auspices of West Yorkshire Police.
Mountain Rescue in the UK is an entirely volunteer-based organisation that operates at no cost to the individuals or organisations who are assisted. Holme Valley MRT is one of 48 teams that belong to Mountain Rescue England and Wales - who estimate the annual cost of running this service to be around £2.5 million. Throughout the organisation’s history, it has received no regular funding from government or any other official sources - individual teams operate independently and meet their own running costs on a charitable basis by donations from the public.
