Help us to hold the Government to account at this critical time
Greens in the room make a difference, if you want more people to hear about the work that we are doing to oppose the draconian measures in bills like the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, then please support our crowdfunder.
Unlike MPs, who receive state funding, members of the House of Lords don’t receive financial support to employ staff.
As the only two Greens in the House of Lords, covering as many issues as we can, we need staff to help with research, administration, social media and press work.
We have a small, part time team who are paid for by the Green Party, but the budget doesn't stretch far enough to cover all the hours we need from them.
We fight for civil libertiesOne of our priorities in Parliament is civil liberties, particularly for activists and protesters. You may know it was revealed a few years ago that the Metropolitan Police had designated Jenny a “domestic extremist” and gathered intelligence about her political and protest activities. This has given her a personal connection to the struggles of others, such as the women whose lives were invaded by undercover officers.
Civicus – an organisation that monitors the openness of civil society around the world – has placed the UK on a watchlist of countries where activism is rapidly becoming more restricted by the Government.
Staff working with us behind the scenes help comb through vast amounts of complex Bills - such as the Government's Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill - and give us the detailed information we need to contribute to debates and propose amendments.
We also regularly question Ministers about civil rights and hold the police to account, but we need the staff to help draft these questions and to liaise with the NGOs and friendly lawyers.
We fight for environmental protectionsWe both pushed hard for the Lords to put forward key changes to the Environment Bill, so that environmental protections are stronger and enforcement more rigorous. Natalie successfully gathered cross party support for an amendment on soil health, with the greens showing real leadership in helping to write the laws that govern this country.
