Across the UK, 11 million people currently face food insecurity, including 3 million children. Meanwhile, across the food supply chain, 10 billion meals worth of food goes to waste every year.
FareShare addresses this issue by rescuing good-to-eat, surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, dairy products and much more. The food is then redistributed to almost 8,000 local charities and community groups across the UK, helping to feed over 1 million people.
By feeding people with surplus food, FareShare not only helps people access nutrition but also prevents the waste of the greenhouse gas emissions and water used to produce, store, and transport that food. Last year alone, FareShare prevented 106,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions and saved 141 billion litres of water from going to waste.
“I work on the weekends, but I don’t earn a huge amount and without the help of Bechange, I’d really struggle to put food on the table for my daughter and me. I’m working really hard to make ends meet but it’s so difficult with bills and groceries all shooting up almost overnight.” Single mum Alison Trevellion, Aylesham, Kent
