Aim

Our community garden is a safe welcoming space where you can escape the stresses of daily life, meet new friends & learn new skills

Summerwood is a busy community garden located on the Summerwood allotment site in the middle of Clifton Housing estate. It has been running 10 years this year! And during this time has supported countless organisations and local residents by providing a supportive environment where people can learn about fruit and veg growing, outdoor cooking, traditional arts & crafts, bring their children for free kids activities or simply use it as a space to escape the stresses of everyday life.

Many local groups access the gardens and use the facilities on a weekly basis such as adult day care centre, social isolation groups, mental health support groups as well as schools & youth groups.

We support and and receive referrals from social inclusion projects, helping the most vulnerable people in the community gain more independence and esteem by getting support to leave their homes and access the project on a regular basis. Our garden provides a safe space where people can meet new people, many of whom have struggled with social isolation.

We provide weekly cooking sessions in our outdoor kitchen area, supporting residents in learning new skills in cooking healthy cheap meals using vegetables we've harvested from the site. We also run weekly support sessions for pupils from the local secondary school many of whom  are struggling in mainstream education. During the holidays we provide free family sessions including our popular Stay and Play which can attract over 120 people each session.

The project has always relied on funding which has become increasingly harder to secure over the past few years, making the future of the garden unstable. Where we try & raise as much as we can through our social enterprise arm, this is not enough to cover the money needed to run much needed sessions at the garden meaning we are still reliant on external funding. This past week we have also experienced a break in which has meant our donations pot has been stolen along with some garden tools and equipment.

So we need your help!

We are fundraising for a number of things: Here's our Wish list :)

We would like to replace the tools & garden equipment stolen plus purchase some new ones for sessions. We also lost money from our donations jar which we use to buy extra ingredients for our Thursday cooking session. We were unable to secure funding for holiday kid woodland sessions this year so we would like to run a series of outreach forest school sessions for kids in woodlands in Clifton over the school holidays.

£3 would pay for plant seeds

£ 4 would pay for some Chicken Feed

£ 5 would pay for some new hand tools

£ 10 would pay for 1 x Thursday session ingredients for our cooking session

£15 would pay for craft materials for our youth session or a new wheelbarrow

£ 20 would pay for some new Shears and garden tools

£ 35 would pay for specialist Fiskcar Loppers

£50 would pay for 1 x kids woodland session

£ 100 would pay for a replacement Strimmer

£250 would pay for Stay and play sessions

£500 would pay for rent and insurance for the year

We do not have funding secured for next year, so any funding received will be gratefully received and will massively help the community garden continue doing the positive work we are doing and help us secure its future.

Many thanks

The Summerwood Team
