Aim

subject matter is an exclusive brand. Each scarf is a memoir of worldwide travels, inspired by the ephemeral nature of our streets.

About subject matter

Founded in 2019, subject matter is captured though the lens of founder, Stephanie Tosniwal (that’s me!) - and inspired by urban architecture.

Each collection of limited-edition luxury silk scarfs is a memoir of my world-wide travels, drawing inspiration from the synthesis of the built environment and the ephemeral nature of the streets in which we live. My aim is to create high quality, signature pieces designed for everyone regardless of age, sex, gender or background.

My Scarves

The images I use are all carefully selected to tell their own unique story - utilising colour and substance with the intension of allowing customers to make a bold statement with their fashion choices! My scarves are for anyone who values contemporary design and finds expression through fashion.

Each scarf is printed and finished here in the UK, with the close working relationships we’ve formed with our printers and suppliers, allowing us to create products of the highest quality and made with the upmost of care.

As a brand, we believe in saying no to fast fashion. Our ethos is simple - to act sustainably and to advocate for the ethical production of textiles. All our scarves are made from 100% natural silk and produced in limited numbers; only ever crafted upon order helping to reduce unnecessary waste and ensuing our products are as unique as our customers.

About me

I’m a down-to-earth northerner, originally from the North West of England. I’m also a mum, a wife, and an Architect by day. I’m not one for downtime and thrive living a busy and adventurous lifestyle – which is just as well!

Everyone in life draws inspiration from various sources. When I think about the people that inspire me, I don’t have to look too far; my parents, my friends and my incredible husband and son. subject matter is as much for them as it I for me. They inspired me to follow my dreams of establishing a business that gives us the flexibility and means to show my son, Ayaan the world – there couldn’t be any greater motivation to succeed than that.

The serious bit...

I’m crowd funding to allow me to take the next steps in my business plan. With one collection of scarfs designed and ready for the world to see, I would like help in finishing my website and commissioning a look-book to showcase my products. Although I love photography, I’m not professionally trained and believe whole heartedly in investing in experts.

With extra funds there’s also the potential for new and limited-edition pieces that tie in with significant dates/events though-out the year. I’d like to collaborate with charities and give something back to those worthy causes through the sale of my scarves - keep your eyes peeled for the first one making its way into your world soon!

This has been a dream of mine for some time now, only I would choose to do this now. In true Steph style I truly believe this is still the right time. I have come so far in developing my idea and perfecting the product, it just needs one more big push and this is where I am asking for you for your support.

I have put together a number of pledge options that vary in budgets for you, to not only back my business, but also get you one step closer to you guys wearing the scarf dreams were made of!

Thank you.

If you have any questions at all regarding your pledge or what a particular reward includes, please email [email protected].

None of this would be possible without the support of you guys, I wanted to thank each and everyone of you for enabling me to give this my best shot. Head over to our social media pages to see more of the scarves and to keep track of our progress.
