Newcastle's first Studio of Sanctuary

by D6: Culture in Transit in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom

We did it
On 26th February 2020 we successfully raised £5,550 with 88 supporters in 35 days

We are raising funds to support artists who are refugees or asylum seekers by creating Newcastle’s first Studio of Sanctuary.

 New stretch target

Thank-you to everyone who has donated so far and helped us reach our initial target! The extra money raised through our stretch target will help us to:

  • Pay the material and running costs of the studio for a longer period of time so we can support more artists
  • Create a drop in communal workspace connected to the studios

The D6 Studio of Sanctuary will provide a space and resources for artists, designers, performers and cultural professionals who have come to our city and region as refugees and asylum seekers.

This project will support artists to research their ideas, make work and meet others.

It will offer new connections to the cultural life of this city and beyond.

The D6 Studio of Sanctuary will be....

A meeting point for the artists to share their work with other creatives and professionals across the cultural and voluntary sectors.

A destination for lively conversations, exchanges and creativity.

An opportunity for individuals to take new steps in their professional practice in this region.

We are asking for your help to transform a rather drab and chilly former office in the centre of Newcastle into a bright, functional and welcoming studio, where the artists in residence can work comfortably and safely.

The D6 Studio of Sanctuary will launch in Spring 2020 to celebrate the renovation of the space and welcome artists in.

If you can make a donation, your funds will support …

Costs of refurbishment to improve the space and bring it to life.

Costs of artists’ travel and materials.

12-months of running costs.

The renovation will be completed by a team of volunteers, so if you cannot make a monetary donation, materials or time would also be highly appreciated!

We need to source paint, building materials, lighting, new kitchen units and kitchenware, including a fridge, hot plate, kettle and dinnerware.

If you’d like to get involved with the volunteer team, or have any materials or equipment to offer, please contact us at [email protected]

The D6 Studio of Sanctuary will serve to support the health and wellbeing of all involved and create spaces for intercultural dialogue to enrich the lives of our communities. It is inspired by the Studio of Sanctuary project at the Art House, Wakefield; the International Cities of Refugee Network, and other initiatives supporting refugees and asylum seekers.
