About StuCAN
The Students Climate Action Network (StuCAN) is a network of students, graduates, educators and built environment professionals aiming to increase climate literacy across our universities. As the student wing of the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN), we support students to challenge and collaborate with their universities to ensure our education adequately prepares us to design for the climate and biodiversity crisis.
The Festival
This October, we’re hosting a StuCAN Festival to bring together built environment students from across the UK and beyond for a Climate Action Festival, taking place in Glasgow. This two day Festival warmly invites student representatives from all schools of architecture in the UK and Ireland (~2 students per university) to be empowered to embed climate action in their practice, through hands-on building using natural materials, workshops and talks by students and practitioners. The Festival will create opportunities to meet like-minded peers, educators and professionals, to spark a wave of future events and action.
Key Outputs
- Hosting a 2-day Festival for 120 students, exploring ‘more than human connections’, reciprocity and regenerative design in the built environment through hands on building, workshops and talks
- Exhibiting the work created over the Festival through the Mobile Climate Action Headquarters, which will be gifted to students at a school of architecture after the event
- Documenting the resources and learnings gathered and publishing them in an open source format for all, via ACAN’s website. Potential to also create a collectively made zine/publication for students
- Providing support and mentorship to students after the event who wish to start their own StuCAN chapter
Why your support matters
Our funding priority is to ensure that the venue and student costs are covered, removing the financial barrier to participate and allowing equal opportunities for students from under-represented backgrounds in architecture and those who may not have university funding. We aim to fairly pay guest speakers and workshop facilitators for their time and travel expenses, as well as reimburse our StuCAN facilitators to work over the weekend, supporting guest facilitators, hosting the Festival and documenting the learnings to be shared afterwards.
What we need your help with:
🏫 £1600 - to secure our venue at the Civic House, Glasgow
🎒 £100/student (for at least 60 participants - 50%) - to provide travel and accommodation bursaries and ensure inclusivity for students, especially those from marginalised or under-represented backgrounds within the built environment profession
💳 £6000 - for workshop facilitation and guest speakers to fairly pay for their time and experience
🍲 £500 - for community meals to create informal sessions for discussions and connection
📑 £200 (minimum) - for event materials to create hands-on activities and workshops that increase climate literacy and turn ideas into action
