About Activiteens
Activiteens was established in 2004 to improve the conditions of life of underprivileged young people who are suffering from the effects of poverty, overcrowding, social-isolation and are at risk of becoming NEET primarily from the Minority Ethnic communities in the London Boroughs of Hackney and Haringey. We do this by providing activities where these young people can develop skills, can reach their maximum potential and grow into productive members of society.
Why are we crowdfunding?
As a result of the cost of living crisis many more families are struggling with poverty. Young people don't take well to such circumstances as they see their family's financial standing as their ticket to social acceptance. They long to escape this cycle of poverty and have approached us to help them improve their chances. Responding to their requests and with the input of many young people in the community “STRONGER FOR THE FUTURE” has been born. Beginning in October 2023, this project will provide 92 disadvantaged young-people from Hackney and Haringey with weekly classes that will empower them with the skills needed to prepare their own food and balance a budget. They will also be engaged in weekly Netball classes that will build their confidence, commitment to a healthy lifestyle and enhance community spirit and resilience.
Project details:
Engaging weekly 90-minute cookery classes will involve participants in planning and cooking healthy meals/snacks enabling them to collect a range of tasteful, economical and exciting recipes which they will be confident to prepare independently. We'll support them to work towards an AQA Level 2 unit award in one or more of the following: Healthy Lifestyles; Food Technology: Catering for a specific function; Food Hygiene and Safety. These will take place in newly-built modular youth-hub unit that includes a purpose-built kitchen. Delivering these crucial sessions comes at a cost of more than £6,500.
Simultaneously, empowering weekly 45-minute after-school financial capability sessions will help young people acquire the skills and knowledge of financial management. They will follow the curriculum set out by the LIBF (The-London-Institute-of-banking-and-Finance) Life Programme and work first towards attaining the LiFA AWARD and then onto the LiFC CERTIFICATE(Level 1 and 2) teaching them the principles of money, how to manage their money and how to keep money safe. Since this is a ‘learning-by-doing’ program, the instructor will support YP through a host of opportunities and they will then undergo formal assessments. This element of the project, including examination costs, has a budget of approximately £3,500.00
Finally, the weekly sports sessions will engage them in Netball sessions that will improve their stamina, muscle strength, hand-eye-coordination as well as other sporting skills while simultaneously enhancing their social and emotional wellbeing. This is especially important to the young people, too many of whom have not picked up sports again since Covid-19. Many are just unmotivated, too busy with their studies or in a vicious cycle of unhealthy living due to their poverty. At each netball session a coach will empower the young people to acquire the skills to excel in this sport. The coach will be supported by a volunteer who will act as the timekeeper, scorekeeper, administrator and who will also be a trained first aider. To deliver this part of the project and re-engage sedentary teens in pulsating sports activities will cost us just over £10,000.00.
Why get involved?
Getting involved by making a donation of any size means that you are supporting disadvantaged young people to do the best they can to improve their chances. We think they deserve a chance, don't you too?
What will the money be used for?
Your kind donations will be spent on staff training, salary costs, ingredients for meals, rent of premises for the delivery of sessions and volunteer costs. Within the sports element of the project, the costs would include the salary for the netball coach which will come in at just over £3500.00 while the rent of netball pitch including facilities & equipment would be less than £6,000.00. Other project costs including induction and training of staff, publicity and volunteer costs would come to approximately £650.00.
