We need your help to bring STRETCH, an extraordinary interactive artwork for all ages and abilities, to Exeter Cathedral
S T R E T C H is a sound sculpture, a screen made up of around 10 miles of fine shirring elastic (used in the top of your socks!). And for a week in May, this interactive installation will be stretched right across the nave of Exeter Cathedral. The sculpture invites participation, so you can touch it, twang it, lean against it, get tangled up in it, and your interaction creates astonishing sounds. It is an inclusive work, accessible to all ages, as intriguing and enthralling to a child as to an elderly person or a wheelchair user, who can move right into the elastic for a rich sensory experience. And it is also a fascinating spectacle to simply sit back and watch. We are so excited to be bringing this astonishing installation right into the very heart of Exeter in an inspirational venue.
Its potential audience is limitless. And this is where you come in.
We need to make S T R E T C H accessible to as many people as possible, for free, during Art Week Exeter. Your donations will help to fund workshops and guided visits for schools and community groups of all ages, abilities and interests and will ensure that we can reach as many people as possible. It will also allow us to continue to refine the work, installing a new sound system which will reverberate and sing in the awesome space of Exeter Cathedral. We really can't do it without you, and every pound really will make a difference.
We have a range of perks to say a big thank you to our funders, from a shout out on social media, to VIP tickets to a magical improvised performance featuring performer Jane Mason, and violinist Emma Welton.
The installation will also be open to the public so come and explore.

S T R E T C H has shown nationally and internationally at festivals, theatres and in public spaces, from West Bromwich Town Hall to Sadler's Wells, London, from Chicago, USA to Perth, Australia. To place S T R E T C H across the 9.5 metre nave of Exeter Cathedral is a very exciting opportunity and unlike any other venue it has visited.
The sculpture’s capacity to make sound is harnessed by connecting the strands of elastic to a sound box to which a number of pick-up microphones and pressure sensors are attached. Raw and recorded sounds, created and activated as a result of a visitor/performer touching the sculpture, are captured, processed and amplified. In the sound design for the vast acoustic space of the cathedral Nick Burge has the unique & exciting opportunity to exploit a complex reverberation of long duration allowing the building to speak, whisper and sing in response to S T R E T C H.
