About us

At Street Trees for Living, we work with residents, community groups, schools and volunteers across Lewisham to tackle climate change at a local level by planting and caring for trees where they are most needed. Many areas of the borough lack access to green space and have limited tree cover, leaving communities more exposed to air pollution, flooding and extreme heat.

Our sponsorship programme maximises community fundraising to increase street tree planting. We support local people to become tree guardians, leading to our high survival rates and strengthening local climate resilience, improving urban cooling and reducing surface water runoff. 

How we’ll spend the money raised

Each sponsored tree requires a suggested donation of £395 which contributes to the cost of the tree and direct planting in the ground. However, the true cost of planting and establishing a single tree over three years is between £1200-£1600. This campaign helps us bridge that gap and maintain our 96% survival rates.

The full cost includes specialist planting, soil preparation, materials and supports, watering equipment, three years of monitoring and maintenance, volunteer training and support, community engagement, and the coordination needed to ensure each tree thrives long term.

As traditional grants reduce, this campaign will make a big impact by helping us cover more of the essential costs that secure the long-term future of street tree planting in Lewisham.

Why are we crowdfunding?

We’re crowdfunding to double donations from residents and community groups to enable us to plant more street trees in the areas that need them most. 

The grant funding available for funding tree planting is changing, but the need for trees hasn’t. To keep planting trees where they are most needed, we are working directly with our community to raise funds and make every donation go further. Your support won’t just cover the costs of planting a tree, it will help care for it so it survives and thrives. This is urgent, practical climate action led by local people.

Every donation made will bring us closer to planting more trees across Lewisham. With Aviva match funding, every donation up to £250 will be matched, increasing your impact and helping us plant and care for more trees where they’re needed most.
